NEW LONDON, Conn.--
After winning their last nine, the lengthy win streak for Coast Guard women's lacrosse finally ended at the hands of #15 MIT in a battle of undefeated conference teams. The Engineers clinch the #1 seed in the NEWMAC tournament with the win, improving to 13-3(9-0 conference).
The first half was appointment viewing with two of the best teams in the country squaring off and proving why they are where they are nationally. The first five minutes of action was helter-skelter with no one finding the back of the net and the physical defenses coming out strong.
Kailee Heron (West Islip, NY) made two impressive saves before a man-up opportunity finally gave MIT what they needed to convert. Heron finished the day with nine saves in a gutsy performance by the sophomore. The Bears would answer with their first score of the night at the end of a shot clock when
Abby McAllister (Pleasantville, NY) took a shot on goal that was saved but
Isabella Judge (Buffalo, NY) was there for the rebound and buried the ball in the net. The first quarter closed out 2-2 after a McAllister goal. Along with her goals, McAllister also led the squad in caused turnovers with three.
In the second, the Bears came out peppering the goal, with one shot saved, one off the crossbar, and one just wide before Judge again struck gold, this time directly assisted by McAllister. The Engineers took back the lead with two scores in under a minute but CGA again answered when it mattered, this time with a McAllister man-up goal. After MIT put up the first two score lead of the day,
Elizabeth Pearcy (Philadelphia, PA) gave CGA a massive goal with under 30 to go in the half to send the game to break at just 6-5.Â
In the second half, MIT came out on fire and was seemingly unstoppable. The Engineers out-scored Coast Guard 8-2 in the half and cruised to a 14-7 victory while holding the Bears to just one goal per quarter. The CGA defense played strong but MIT dominated the time of possession and had many more opportunities at the goal.
Coast Guard, now 11-2 (8-1 NEWMAC) will close out their regular season with a 6:00 PM game at Salve Regina on Wednesday April 22nd. 7-7 Salve is playing at Clark University at 7:00 PM this evening April 18th.
