Coast Guard men's lacrosse struggles continue as they lost on the road at MIT with a final score of 19-7. With this third straight loss, the Bears now fall to 3-8 and 2-3 in NEWMAC. The Engineers improve to 7-5 and 4-1 in NEWMAC.
Saturday afternoon started out slow for both offenses as neither team could find the back of the net for over 8 minutes of play. MIT struck first with 6:17 left into the first quarter. This goal opened the floodgates for the Engineers as they went on to score 5 more unanswered goals, including 1 with 1 second left in the quarter. MIT led 6-0 at the end of the first 15 minutes.
MIT kept their offense going strong as they scored 41 seconds into the first quarter as Riley Pierce scored his third goal of the day for the Engineers. Coast Guard scored their first goal of the day as sophomore Ezekiel Christian (Stonington, Conn.) scored an unassisted goal with 12:50 left in the second quarter. The Engineers quickly responded with 2 more goals. The Bears managed to get another 2 tallies on the board, but the Engineers went on to score 3 more times to end the first half. Going into halftime, MIT led 12-3.
58 seconds into the second half, junior Eric Key (Clarksville, Md.) found the back of the net to make it 12-4 in favor of MIT. The next 3 goals were all scored by Engineers to increase their lead, including 2 man-up goals. After a faceoff win, junior Mason Tucker (Alpharetta, Ga.) scored his first collegiate goal to make it a 15-5 game with 7:50 remaining in the third quarter. Coast Guard then converted on a man-up opportunity, but MIT answered with a goal of their own to end the quarter leading 16-6.
The Bears could not complete their comeback as they scored only 1 goal in the fourth quarter compared to 3 more goals for the Engineers.
With 2 games remaining in the regular season for Coast Guard, they will be back home next Saturday April 18th hosting Springfield College. That game is scheduled to start at 3pm EST at Cadet Memorial Field.
