Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Bears fall close to Conn for first loss of season

NEW LONDON, Conn. --

Wednesday night, March 4th, Coast Guard women's lacrosse traveled just down the road to face off against Connecticut College. Both teams would look to stay undefeated, however Connecticut College would be the victor in this contest winning a tight one with a final score of 9-7.

This contest started off very close with back and fourth goals that would have the game tied at two goals each at the end of the first quarter. Three out of the four goals came from free position shots.

The Camels got their first lead of the game less than two minutes into the second quarter to put them up 3-2. Not long after, the Bears scored from yet another free position shot to tie the game 3-3 at the end of the first half.

Less than a minute into the third quarter, Connecticut regained the lead with a goal from Sophia Virgilio. Then, with 12:56 remaining in the quarter, Bears' freshman Joely Schaumloffel (Remsenberg, N.Y.) scored from yet another free position shot to tie the game at 4-4. Coast Guard got their lead back as sophomore Elizabeth Pearcy (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored with an assist from Schaumloffel. Schaumloffel finished the day with 3 points to give her 14 points in only 3 games into the season. This game continued to be back-and-forth, with the Camels tying the game at 6-6 going into the final 15 minutes of play.

Connecticut started off with the ball to begin the fourth quarter due to a foul late in the third quarter. Kate Coughlin scored on a free position shot, also a man-up goal. This gave the Camels their first lead since the second quarter. Less than a minute later, Victoria Evans scored on another free position man-up goal opportunity. Connecticut led 8-6 with 12:53 left to play. Caroline Villarin scored for the Camels that would eventually seal this win. Bears' senior Abby McAllister (Pleasantville, N.Y.) scored with just 53 seconds left, but it was just too little too late for the Bears. Final score 9-6 in favor of Connecticut College. They stay perfect as their record is now 2-0, and Coast Guard picked up their first loss of the season as they fall to 2-1.

The Bears will enjoy a nice break following this loss, but will be back in action Saturday, March 14th, at Cadet Memorial Field. This will be the first game of conference play in which they host Babson College (2-0) at 12pm EST.
