Women's Lax opens NEWMAC play by upsetting #19 Babson

NEW LONDON, Conn. —

Saturday, March 14th, Coast Guard women's lacrosse hosted #19 ranked Babson College. After a tough loss on the road at Connecticut College, the Bears bounced back and upset Babson 10-6 at Cadet Memorial Field.

Babson College started off the game a man-down 6 seconds into the first quarter. Coast Guard was unable to take advantage of an early penalty and made a costly turnover that would lead to the Beavers scoring the first goal of the game with 12:14 remaining in the first quarter. A few minutes later, and the Beavers added another tally to the scoring sheet as Grace Rooney got an unassisted goal with 8:34 left to play in the first. The Bears answered just a minute later with Hannah Warnke (Lincoln, Neb.) scoring her 8th goal of the season and cutting the Beavers' lead in half to 2-1. Babson increased their lead back to 2 goals 20 seconds later, but the Bears would get 2 more to tie the game at 3-3 at the end of the first.

Coast Guard kept their momentum going into the second quarter, as they scored 4 goals while keeping Babson scoreless. Senior Abby McAllister (Pleasantville, N.Y.) scored 2 of the 4 goals, and assisted freshman Joely Schaumloffel (Remsenburg, N.Y.) on her goal in the second quarter. McAllister would finish the day with 7 points, including 4 goals and 3 assists. The Bears lead 7-3 at halftime.

The third quarter was just more of the second, in which Coast Guard scored 3 more unanswered goals. They led 10-3 at the end of the third and it seemed like the game was becoming out-of-reach for the Beavers.

Less than 30 seconds into the fourth quarter, the Beavers would score their first goal since the first quarter making it 10-4 in favor of the Bears. A few minutes later, Jenna Wong scored again for Babson making it 10-5. The leading scorer for Babson finished the day with 3 goals. 29 seconds later, the Beavers scored another unassisted goal. What was a 7-goal lead became a 4-goal lead with 11:10 to play in the game, quickly prompting the Bears to call a timeout. This timeout sparked a defensive mindset in Coast Guard as they would not let anymore in, and go on to win this contest with a final score of 10-6.

The Bears start out conference play with a win and increase to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in NEWMAC play. Babson Beavers take their first loss of the season and fall to 3-1 and 0-1 in NEWMAC. Coast Guard women's lacrosse are back in action on Wednesday night, March 18th at 6 PM EST as they will host Merchant Marine (1-2 and 1-0).
