The United States Coast Guard Academy tennis team was defeated, 1-6, by New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes Emerson College on Sunday. The Bears' lone point on the day was won by junior
Noah Reice (Wilmington, Del.) in his season debut at #6 singles.
Coast Guard drops to 0-3 on the season and opens the conference slate at 0-1, while Emerson improves to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Lions will face another NEWMAC challenge in the form of Babson College 8-3 (1-0) for their next one on Friday, April 3rd.
Emerson claimed the doubles point by winning all three of the opening matches. Coast Guard's #1 pair of junior
Ben Bonetto (Bend, Oreg.) and senior
Brendan Love (Winchester, Va.) put up the best effort with a 4-6 loss to
Filippo Nochi and
Connor Leung. Reice and senior
Benjamin Carlander (Monument, Colo.) were defeated, 3-6, on #3 by
Adam Alireza and
Caiden Riebold.
Three singles matches took three sets to be decided, but none were in the Bears' favor. At #1, Bonetto took the first set with a 7-4 tiebreaker before the Lion powered back for 6-4 and 6-3 wins to claim the point. It was the same start for sophomore #2
Anthony Gregorie (Hagatna, Guam), but Leung wo the next two sets with scores of 6-1. Love stared with a 6-0 first set victory before Alireza picked up the point with 6-1 and 6-2 set scores.
Ultimately, it was Reice ?claiming Coast Guard's only point of the day. The junior made his 2026 debut on the court following his All-American performance at NCAA DIII swimming nationals and notched a 2-0 win against
Cameron McAllister, taking the fist set at 6-1 before winning the match on a 7-3 tiebreaker in set two.
Bears tennis will look for their first win of the season next Saturday, April 4th, in further NEWMAC action at home against Salve Regina University (0-9, 0-2). Coast Guard won last year's meeting by a 6-1 margin.
