Babson staves off Baseball's game two rally to sweep Sunday NEWMAC pair

NEW LONDON, Conn. —

The United States Coast Guard Academy baseball team fell twice to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rivals Babson College on Sunday by scores of 2-5 and 6-9. The Beavers scored five runs without response to take the first game before putting out the flames on a ninth-inning rally for the Bears in gam two.

Coast Guard drops to 6-8 on the season and remain winless in league play at 0-3, while Babson improves to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC. The Beavers will face further in-conference adversity on Tuesday, March 31st, when they travel to Wheaton College (11-4, 2-1).

Game 1: Bears 2, Babson 5; Box Score

Junior utilityman Gus Barrido (Tampa, Fla.) was 3-for-4 with a double and third-year first baseman Nate Stafford (Jupiter, Fla.) drove in both of the Bears' runs in game one. Senior right-hander Raymond Priddy (Chico, Calif.) was tabbed for the loss, dropping his record to 1-2, after allowing one earned run over 4.1 innings. Fellow senior righty Tyler Michalek (Fort Worth, Tex.) was outstanding in relief as he struck out five and allowed one hit while pitching shutout ball for the rest of the game.

It was Ryan Liss with the big game at the plate for Babson as he went 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Robert Christensen went 1-for-4 with two ribbies and Gabe Cushner's lone hit of the game was a double. Joe Carrera earned his first win of the season after striking out five in eight innings of work, and Zandor Teator earned his third save of 2026 with two strikeouts in the ninth.

The Bears got out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Stafford plated two with a single down the right field line, but Liss cut the lead in half in the top second with his homer to left center. Christensen tied it in the fourth with an RBI single to center field, and Babson took the lead in the fifth by scoring three unearned runs with help from two errors by the Bears infield.

Game 2: Bears 6, Babson 9; Box Score

The Bears' youth movement was on display in game two in the form of multi-hit games by three freshmen. Yadisson Karbalaieasghar (Coral Springs, Fla.), Anthony DiClemente (Stafford, Va.), and Peter Karloutsos (Ridgefield, Conn.) all recorded two hits in the matinee, with the latter two recording an RBI each and DiClemente hitting a double. Sophomore outfielder Max Van Auken (Franklinville, N.J.) also found himself on second base with his lone hit of the day.

Cushner went 4-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the four multi-hit games for Babson. Teator was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, Ryan Hvozdovic was also 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Ryan Grace went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Chase Burrows picked up his third win of the season after pitching eight innings of one-run ball and striking out seven, while sophomore southpaw John DiMarsico (Severna Park, Md.) dropped to 2-1 after allowing three earned runs in the 3.1 innings pitched. Junior righty Jackson Dorsey (Newark, Del.) struck out four over 2.2 innings as the first of four relievers.

Cushner plated Babson's first two runs with RBI singles in the second and third inning before the Beavers added four more in the fourth. Van Auken hit into a fielder's choice to bring in a runner from third in the sixth inning and get the Bears on the board, but Hvozdovic put the hosts back to square one with his RBI double in the seventh. Grace added two more with another double in the ninth to make it 9-1.

The Bears were able load the bases without an out while facing a new pitcher in the ninth, and senior infielder Tate Scherer (Mystic, Conn.) brought two around with a single down the line. DiClemente followed with a ground-rule double to plate another before sophomore outfielder Devon Elmendorf (Lake Mary, Fla.) made it 9-5 with a sac fly. A batter later, Karloutsos singled to center field to make it a three-run game, but Babson's pitcher was able to squash the rally soon after with a strikeout.

Bears baseball will look to bounce back on Tuesday, March 31st, against NEWMAC foes Clark University (12-5, 1-0), with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 PM ET. The Cougars' have won their only league game this season, an 11-6 defeat of Coast Guard back on March 24th.
