NEW LONDON, Conn. --
Saturday afternoon, Coast Guard men's lacrosse bounced back after a tough loss earlier in the week with a win at home against Emerson College 14-3.
This contest started out slow with neither team being able to capitalize on their first offense chances. At 11:16 left in the first quarter, Coast Guard struck first by none other than their leading scorer sophomore
Ezekiel Christian (Stonington, Conn.). After a penalty from both sides, the Bears scored again and Christian got an assist on that goal at 5:57. Coast Guard scored once more before the end of the first quarter while holding Emerson scoreless.
Just over 3 minutes into the second quarter, the Lions scored their first goal of the game with
Aedan Kiniry getting the tally and
Dylan Wong getting the assist. Two minutes and eight seconds later, Christian scored yet again for the Bears to increase their lead back to 3 goals. Neither team found the back of the net for the rest of the first half. Coast Guard led 4-1.
Less than two minutes into the second half, junior attackman
Davis Lee (Newport, R.I.) scored his first goal of the year to add to the Bears' lead. The Lions answered with a goal of their own six minutes later. Then, Coast Guard went on to score three straight goals in less than two minutes apart. This made the score 8-2 going into the last quarter.
The game became out of reach for Emerson as Coast Guard made several substitutions to start the fourth quarter. The Bears added five more goals to the scoreboard, including a first collegiate goal for freshman midfielder
James McManus (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.). Emerson managed to score one more time this afternoon with five minutes remaining in the game. When it seemed like the game was over, freshman attackman
Gavin Wienhold (Baltimore, Md.) scored a man-up goal with less than one second left in the game to give him his first collegiate goal as well.
Following this win, Coast Guard improves to 3-5 in the regular season and 2-1 in NEWMAC. Emerson College falls to 3-8 on the regular season and remains winless in the NEWMAC 0-3.
The Bears are back in action Tuesday night March 31st as they host Union College at Cadet Memorial Field in New London, CT. for a 6pm EST start.
