Merchant Marine rides big 2nd quarter past Men's Lacrosse

KINGS POINT, N.Y. — 

The United States Coast Guard Academy men's lacrosse team wound up on the wrong side of a 10-13 result with their archrivals at the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Thursday. Merchant Marine was able to take hold of the contest with a seven-point second quarter.

Coast Guard drops to 2-5 on the season, while the Mariners improve to 4-4. Kings Point will open Skyline Conference play in their next game on Saturday, March 28th, when they host St. Joseph's University Long Island (3-3). The win also moves the needle in the Mariners' direction for the 2025-26 Superintendent's Trophy race, of which they hold an 8-6-1 lead in head-to-head meetings with the Bears this year. Kings Point can claim their first Trophy victory since 2014 with an win in any of the upcoming match-ups for men's and women's track & field (April 4th) or men's tennis (April 9th).

Senior midfielder Patrick Smith (Leesburg, Va.) scored four goals for a team-leading four points, and he was followed by junior attackman Noah Heller's (Baltimore, Md.) two scores and an assist. For USMMA, it was Jack DeTommaso leading the charge with three goals and three assists. Landon Locke contributed two goals and three assists, while William Badeer scored four times. Julian Garcia earned the win between the posts with a seven-save showing.

Junior attacker Max Silver (Jupiter, Fla.) started the scoring at 13:53 with an unassisted goal before DeTommaso tied it back up at 9:26. Both sides scored two more times before the end of the first quarter to send it into the second locked at 3-3. The Mariners took control in the second quarter by outscoring their guests, 7-1. They eventually took a seven-goal run into the third quarter before it was broken up by Smith at 8:15. Coast Guard scored two more before the buzzer rang to make it a 7-12 game heading into the fourth. At 13:37 in the final period, DeTammaso connected with Badeer for the dagger while the Kings Point defense was able to spread out three goals from Smith across the rest of the night.

Bears men's lax will look to bounce back on Saturday, March 28th, as they return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play against Emerson College (3-7, 0-2). Coast Guard was a 12-4 victor at last season's meeting in Boston.
