NEW LONDON, Conn, --
In their first home game of the season, Coast Guard walked off Albertus Magnus for a 6-5 win. The win improves the Bears to 6-7 on the year and drops Albertus to 6-8. The Falcons will next travel to Lasell for a Saturday doubleheader on March 28th.
After starter
Jack Spinnato(Clearwater, FL) escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the first, the Bear's bats got rolling right away in the bottom half. The first three men reached,
Carson Cho(Haymarket, VA) via walk,
Gus Barrido(Tampa, FL) and
Nate Stafford(Jupiter, FL) by single. With the bases juiced,
Max Van Auken(Franklinville, NJ) hit a sacrifice fly to score Cho for the first run of the game. Two batters later, a
Tyler Michalek(Fort Worth, TX) wall ball double scored Barrido and Stafford to give CGA an early 3-0 advantage.Â
Albertus would answer right back with a five run second inning to take the lead. Freshman
John Jacobson(Dallas, TX) came in to stop the bleeding, retiring both men he faced in the second. Jacobson rode that momentum into 4.2 IP of no-hit, no-run ball, walking none and striking out five.Â
In the third, the Bears chipped away, manufacturing a run with a two-out rally.
Max Van Auken got it all started with a double before
Ayden Gurevich(Lake Worth Beach, FL) scored him with a single. Three innings later, they tied it up at 5-5 on a
Nate Stafford RBI four pitch walk to score
Luke Percifield(Pinellas Park, FL) who singled earlier in the inning. After Jacobson shoved to keep the Bears in the game,
Jack Gausselin(Long Beach, IN) took over and followed suit, allowing no hits and just one baserunner across the 7th and 8th innings. In the bottom of the 8th, the Bears stranded a man on third to send the game into the 9th tied.
In the 9th,
Jackson Dorsey(Newark, DE) entered the game and struck out the first batter he faced. After walking the Falcons leadoff man
Adrial Espada, first baseman
Nate Stafford made the play of the game on defense. After an overthrow to first, Stafford ran down the ball and fired a missile to the glove of third baseman
Luke Percifield to nail the runner and secure the second out of the inning. One pitch later, Dorsey fielded a dribbler back to him to keep the score tied into the bottom of the 9th. Dorsey exited the game as the third Bear reliever in a row to not give up a run or hit.
In that bottom half,
Tyler Michalek doubled down the line, narrowly avoiding the tag while sliding into second to get the action started for CGA. Sophomore
Mason Phillips(Oak Park, IL) pinch ran for Michalek and advanced to third on a
Kael Godshalk(Bangor, PA) well-executed bunt. With Phillips on third,
Yadisson Karbalaieasghar(Coral Springs, FL) did his job with a game-winning sacrifice fly to give Coast Guard the victory in their first home game of the season.
The Bears will be home again this weekend with a Saturday March 28th doubleheader vs Babson College with game one slated for 12:00 PM.
