Heller strikes in OT to lift Men's Lax past NEWMAC foes Clark

WORCESTER, Mass. — 

Coast Guard men's lacrosse ended their 3-game losing streak as they beat Clark University on the road in an overtime thriller 15-14 Saturday, March 21st. Coast Guard improves to 2-4 on the season and 2-2 in NEWMAC. Clark remains winless as they fall to 0-8 and 0-2 in NEWMAC.

The Bears struck first just 49 seconds into the game as senior Patrick Smith (Leesburg, Va.) scored. Clark quickly answered back just 11 seconds later following a Cougars faceoff win that led to a fastbreak goal. 2 and a half minutes into the first quarter, the Cougars took their first lead of the game 2-1. Coast Guard was given their first man-up opportunity early on, but could not convert. Due to a Clark turnover, the Bears had another chance on offense which they took advantage of with junior Noah Heller (Baltimore, Md.) finding the back of the net with 9:47 remaining in the first quarter. The Bears took their lead back with 8:09 left in the first, but Clark tied the game again a minute later to make it 3-3. Junior Max Silver (Jupiter, Fla.) gave the Bears the lead once again with 3:26 left in the quarter. The Bears scored one more time in the first quarter giving them a 5-3 lead.

Less than a minute into the second quarter, the Bears kept the offense rolling as Smith scored again. Clark answered back 1 minute and 11 seconds later to cut the lead to 6-4. Just 44 seconds later, junior Jack Elgas (San Diego, Calif.) scored his second of the day to make it 7-4 in favor of Coast Guard. With 10:30 remaining in the second quarter, the Bears added to their lead as sophomore defender Ethan Cumming (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal. Clark found the back of the net 2 more times in the first half, and Coast Guard scored once more to make it 9-6 at halftime.

Clark got the first goal just over 5 minutes into the second half, and then made it a 1-goal game with 9 minutes left in the third quarter. Just 49 seconds later, the Cougars tied the game at 9-9 as Tate Gorman scored with an assist from Michael Berman Annuziata. The Cougars had all of the momentum on their side as they scored their 4th unanswered goal of the quarter to give them their first lead since the first quarter. Coast Guard would not let this game just slip away as they tied the game again as Heller scored his third goal of the day with 5:23 remaining in the third quarter. The game remained tied at 10-10 going into the fourth quarter.

Just under 3 minutes into the fourth quarter, Coast Guard regained their lead as freshman Liam Miller (Radnor, Pa.) scored his second goal of the day. Clark converted on a man-up opportunity to tie the game 11-11 with 10:24 left in the contest. The Cougars scored 2 more times before the Bears would respond and make it 13-12 in favor of Clark with 8:22 remaining. Smith scored again with an assist from sophomore Ezekiel Christian (Stonington, Conn.) for Coast Guard to tie the game at 13-13. Clark put the pressure on as they scored with 2:58 left in the game. 1 minute later the Bears tied the game at 14-14. With each team getting a chance to take the lead and win in regulation, neither side managed to score which sent it to overtime.

Coast Guard started overtime with possession and on a man-up opportunity due to a foul at the end of regulation. The Bears were not able to convert on the advantage. Clark got their own man-up opportunity in overtime, however they could not convert either. With just 11 seconds left in overtime, Heller won it for the Bears with an assist from Christian. Final score: 15-14 Coast Guard.

The Bears will be back in action Tuesday, March 24th as they will travel to Kings Point, N.Y. to face off against rival Merchant Marine. Face off at 7pm EST
