Bears drop midweek matchup at Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --

On a brisk Thursday afternoon, the final day of Winter, Coast Guard traveled to Springfield to face off with the Golden Bears of Western New England. In a tight affair, with no scoring in the final four innings, WNE came out on top by a score of 5-2. The loss drops CGA to 3-6 on the season. WNE improves to 6-4 with the win. They will next host the University of Saint Joseph(CT) tomorrow at 3:00 PM.

Coast Guard got the scoring started with a two out 2nd inning rally. Anthony DiClemente(Stafford, VA) singled and stole second to get into scoring position for Mason Phillips(Oak Park, IL) who singled him in. Western New England answered right away however, with two runs in the bottom of the second and another in the third.

The fourth inning saw Coast Guard scratch another run across, again with DiClemente as a major contributor. Ayden Gurevich(Lake Worth Beach, FL) singled and stole second, scoring on an Anthony DiClemente single five pitches later. DiClemente was the lone man in the lineup with two hits.

From the fifth inning on, WNE tacked on two more runs while the Bears were held scoreless. Coast Guard was kept alive in the final innings thanks to 3.1 scoreless innings from senior Conor Watts(Mahopac, NY) and freshman John Jacobson(Dallas, TX). Watts went 2.1, Jacobson one strong, with each giving up just one hit while striking out one.

Coast Guard will get back out on the field on Saturday for a doubleheader vs 7-4 Brandeis at Waltham High School.
