Bears sing last in commanding victory over Kings Point

NEW LONDON, Conn. --

Coast Guard women's lacrosse faced off against rival Merchant Marine Wednesday night. The Bears got the better of the Mariners in this contest with a final score of 15-5. With this win, the Bears improve to 4-1 and 1-0 in NEWMAC. The Mariners fall to 1-3 and 1-0 in Skyline conference. The win now leaves Coast Guard trailing by just one point in the Superintendent's Trophy standings(6-7-1) with men's and women's track, men's lacrosse, and tennis remaining.

Coast Guard struck first just 41 seconds into the match when freshman Taylor Thorne (Edgewater, Md.) found the back of the net. 30 seconds later, the Mariners tied the game at one goal a piece. Freshman Joely Schaumloffel (Remsenburg, N.Y.) then scored with 6:32 left in the first quarter that would start a streak of Bears' goals. Coast Guard scored two more times in the first quarter to give them a 4-1 lead.

Just under two minutes into the second quarter, senior Abby McAllister (Pleasantville, N.Y.) scored her second of the day. McAllister finished the game with five goals and two assists. Merchant Marine managed to score again to make the game 5-2 with 10:41 remaining in the first half, however Coast Guard went on to score another two more goals to put them up 7-2 at halftime.

The third quarter would not prove to be any different from the previous two, as the Bears opened up the second half as Schaumloffel scored once and McAllister scored twice. This increased the Bears' lead to 10-2. As this game started to slip away from the Mariners, they converted on a man-up opportunity with 2:19 left in the third quarter.

The Bears kept their foot on the gas going into the fourth quarter as McAllister scored yet again, and Thorne did as well. Merchant Marine found the back of the net twice in the fourth afterwards, but Coast Guard scored 3 more times to give them the definitive win with a final score of 15-5.

Bears' women's lacrosse will be back in NEWMAC action this weekend as they travel to South Hadley, Mass. as they face off against Mount Holyoke. The Lyons are currently 4-1 and 0-1 in NEWMAC. The faceoff starts at 12pm EST.
