NEWPORT, R.I. —
Coast Guard men's lacrosse was on the road Saturday, March 14th at Salve Regina University. The Bears suffered their third straight loss with a final score of 16-12.
Sophomore attackman Ezekiel Christian (Stonington, Conn.) started off the scoring just 22 seconds into the game to give the Bears the lead. 3 minutes later, the Bears increased their lead to 2-0 with 11:43 left to play in the first quarter. The Seahawks completely changed the game as they went on to score 5 straight goals, including 1 man-up goal. Coast Guard scored one more with 3:16 remaining in the first. Salve Regina led 5-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The Seahawks took advantage of another man-up opportunity as they scored 10 seconds into the second quarter giving them a 6-3 lead. The Bears quickly answered as junior attackman Eric Key (Clarksville, Md.) found the back of the net with 14:11 remaining in the first half. Salve Regina scored 2 straight goals less than a minute later, and another to make the game 9-4 with 8:53 left in the second quarter. After this, each team scored 2 goals a piece giving the Seahawks a 11-6 lead at halftime.
21 seconds into the second half, senior midfielder Patrick Smith (Leesburg, Va.) scored for the Bears. 30 seconds later, Salve Regina came right back with a goal of their own making it 12-7. Each team scored 3 more goals in the third quarter, including a third man-up goal from the Seahawks.
Down 5 goals at the start of the fourth quarter, the Bears started to make a rally scoring 2 goals to cut the lead to 15-12 with 4:45 left to play in the game. Salve Regina stopped the comeback as they scored a goal 35 seconds later, and kept Coast Guard scoreless in the last 4 minutes of play.
Opening up NEWMAC play, the Bears fall to 1-4 and 0-1, and the Seahawks improve to 5-1 and 1-0. Coast Guard men's lacrosse continues on the road, as their next game will be Saturday, March 21st at Clark University for a 3PM EST start.
