NEW YORK, NY --
In a key dual day for the Bears, they defeated both Bridgewater State and #20 New York University. Bridgewater State will get back on the mat Friday February 13th at Rhode Island College with duals vs RIC and Trinity(CT). NYU will host the UAA Championship on Saturday February 14th.Â
The day started for the Bears with a dominating 34-6 win over Bridgewater State. It was a pair of freshmen with the highlight reel moments for CGA with 125
Kekoa Madayag(Rohnert Park, CA) and 184
Chase Mayes(Nolensville, TN) with pins to win their bouts. While Madayag and Mayes recorded falls, three other men had technical fall victories. 165
Joey Miranda(South Harrison, NJ) with a 18-3 win, 174
Thomas Rhodes(Last Forest Park, WA) had a 19-4 finish, and heavyweight
Carl DiGiorgio(Doylestown, PA) capped off the early window with a 16-4 win.
The other Bears with wins vs BSU were 141
Robert Rerras(Herndon, VA) with a 15-1 major decision, 149
Nicholas Sanders(Fredericksburg, VA) with a 7-2 decision, and 157
Mike Edwards(Glenpool, OK) with a 12-6 decision.Â
After cruising to victory in the early dual, the Bears grand finale was a nailbiter. It was a battle of ranked powerhouses with the NYU Violets and Coast Guard Bears, two perennial national contenders. The Violets struck first with a tech fall to start the day and take a 5-0 lead, but starving for a win, 133
Marvin Armistead(Reading, PA) tied the score at five a piece with an 18-3 tech fall of his own. NYU took the lead back over at 8-5 with a
James Carlock 8-5 grueling decision over Bears 141
Christian Belford(Edmond, OK).Â
Coast Guard took control in the middleweights with
Nathan Fitt(Branchville, NJ),
Jacob Woodburn(Greensboro, NC), and
Landon Kearns(East Brunswick, NJ) notching back-to-back-to-back wins. Fitt continued his dominant streak with an early pin while Woodburn and Kearns won by major decision. With CGA leading 18-8, the Violet showed their fight and got themselves right back into the dual with a decision win at 174 by
Ty Finn and major at 184 by
Justin Mayes. The penultimate bout of the day; a
Mo Talebi major decision, set up a heavyweight grand finale that you couldn't have scripted any better. With CGA down 19-18,
Carl DiGiorgio would face off against
Nathan Faxon with the winner giving their team the win. Despite the dramatic setup, DiGiorgio made sure the dramatics would not continue with a convincing 33-16 tech fall to send the Bears home victors by a score of 23-19.Â
Coast Guard is now 9-4 on the season. Next Sunday they will host the NEWA Futures with a start time of 11:00 AM.
