CAMBRIDGE, Mass. —
No. 5 Massachusetts Institute of Technology put five goals past the United States Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team during Saturday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in Cambridge.
Coast Guard falls to 2-3-4 overall and 0-1-2 on the conference table, with the result extending their winless streak to four. MIT improves to 9-1-1 on the season and 3-0-0 in-conference. The Engineers will look to make it a win streak tomorrow when they host Washington University at noon ET.
The Bears held their hosts scoreless until MIT broke the tie in the 32nd minute. The Engineers would put one more into the back of the net just before halftime in the 45th, and then made it a 3-0 game in the 63rd minute. Coast Guard was forced to play a woman down after being shown a red card in the 77th, which the Engineers took advantage of by scoring off of the rewarded free kick. MIT would add one more for good measure in the 88th.
Coast Guard dwarfed in shot differential, mustering just two shots while MIT was able to try 20. Junior midfielder
Ella Pottle (Epping, N.H.) and senior forward
Meren Zeliger (Farmington, Maine) were the two shot-takers for the Bears, with neither being on goal. MIT took all ten of the games' corner kicks, while being called for seven fouls to Coast Guard's five. Senior goalkeeper
Julia Little (Pensacola, Fla.) saved four shots in the effort.
Bears women's soccer will look to bounce back on Wednesday, the 7th, when they host Springfield College (2-7-0, 1-2-0) for a 6:00 PM meeting at Nitchman Field. Coast Guard suffered two losses to the Pride last season, the first being a 1-2 loss in the regular season before Springfield knocked the Bears out of the NEWMAC playoffs with a 2-4 result.
