WORCESTER, Mass. —
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy men's rowing team traveled to Worcester, Massachusetts, this past weekend to compete in the Wormtown Chase, the team's last regatta of the fall season. All 36 members of the team raced while ten rowers seeing action twice.
First up was the Collegiate V8, in which Coasty Guard entered three boats. The field was led by Division I teams Holy Cross and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a strong team from Wesleyan University, with all three teams taking the top six places. Following was Worcester Polytechnic Institute, who finished 3.4 seconds ahead of the Bears A boat, who finished in eighth. Holy Cross and Wesleyan took the next four places before WPI's B edged Coast Guard's 2V by 1.1 seconds.
For the first time ever, the Bears were able to put forth a third collegiate eight at Wormtown, with the team giving a solid row that shows promise of things to come in the spring. Of special significance for the 3V were two members, juniors Isaac Kreft (Elbow Lake, Minn.) and Harrison Wade (Colorado Springs, Colo.), a pair of Air Force Academy cadets who trained and raced with them while attending CGA as part of the Service Academy Exchange Program.
Next up was the Novice V8 race, in which Coast Guard started second in the field but powered past the Massachusetts Maritime Academy team early in the race and rowed away from the field to win with a time of 19:16.4, which was 28 seconds ahead of second place University of Connecticut. As the team goes through their winter training, the novice rowers will be integrated into the V8, 2V, 3V, and 4V in anticipation of the spring campaign.
The final race of the day was the Collegiate 4V. Starting fifth in the order, the A boat of Kimber Moring (Folsom, Calif.), Ben Dush (Henderson, Nev.), Jonah McFarland, (Seattle, Wash.) Harrison Williams (Bellevue, Wash.), and Nick Salvati (Monroeville, N.J.) powered through several crews while chasing after Holy Cross. The crew finished second, 11 seconds behind the Crusaders. Coast Guard's B boat with Brent Fournier (Bedford, N.H.), Noah Rodger, (Tampa, Fla.) Maddox Holmes-Selby (San Clemente, Calif.), Eli Chapman (Daphne, Ala.), and Zac Gamble (Waterford, Conn.) started at the back of the pack, passed four boats, and finished in third with a time six seconds behind the A boat, ending the fall season on a high note.
The team now turns their attention indoors to prepare for the 2026 spring campaign, which will kick off with on February 21st with the annual "Return to the River" dinner and the team's annual trip to Clemson, South Carolina, which departs on March 6th.
