NEW LONDON, Conn. –
After getting down early, Coast Guard was unable to fight back vs the Engineers of MIT. Coast Guard scored the first goal of the day on an unassisted goal by
Eric Key(Clarksville, MD). After his goal, MIT scored five unanswered goals in the rest of the first and into the second quarter.
Jake Chambers(Annapolis, MD) chipped away with an unassisted goal in the 2nd quarter to cut the MIT lead down to three but the Engineers ran off four more unanswered goals in the second to take a 9-2 lead midway through the quarter.
At the end of the first half and early in the second, Coast Guard made their move.
Patrick Smith(Leesburg, VA) and
Ryan Hunter(Bethesda, MD) scored goals at the end of the first with Hunter assisting on an
Ezekiel Christian(Stonington, CT) goal to start the second half. Two minutes after Christian's goal, CGA would gain all of the momentum with back to back acrobatic, defender evading goals by
Eric Key and
Jake Chambers(Annapolis, MD). MIT would get one goal back and was poised for another when(thanks to two CGA penalties) they had a two man advantage on the Bears with three minutes to go in the third. Fortunately for the Bears, keeper
Brett Tobasky(Brookline, MA) made an outstanding save to keep the momentum on his team's side. Just over a minute later, Coast Guard would again be penalized but this time MIT was able to capitalize, scoring a goal to go up four into the final quarter, the margin they would ultimately win by after the teams went back and forth with two goals a piece in the fourth.
MIT improves to 4-6 (2-2 NEWMAC) on the year. They will next host Emerson College a week from today on Saturday April 12th at 4:00 PM.
For Coast Guard, it was a story of unforced errors. The Bears lost despite dominating on the X, winning 20 of 25 face-offs.
Mason Tucker(Alpharetta, GA) led the Bears on that front, winning 18 of 22 on the X with 16 ground balls. Coast Guard however parlayed their faceoff dominance into a season high 25 turnovers to just 14 from MIT. Coast Guard also had more penalty minutes than MIT(6-4).
The loss drops Coast Guard to 7-3(2-2 NEWMAC). They will look to bounce back next Saturday on the road at 1:00 PM vs a Springfield team currently receiving votes in the USILA polls.
