Bears Unable to Overcome Strong First Half by Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.  -  In New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on the road, Coast Guard men's lacrosse was unable to slow down hosts Springfield College in the first half, leading to a 5-12 defeat. Springfield scored ten of their dozen between the first two quarters.

Coast Guard moves to 7-4 overall and 2-3 in league play following their second straight loss, while the Pride improve to 7-5 on the season and remain the lone undefeated team in NEWMAC competitions at 5-0. The Pride will get a break from conference action on April 16th as hosts of 7-3 Wesleyan University (Conn.), who have played up to a #7 ranking in the latest edition of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's (USILA) weekly coaches poll.

Senior attacker Mason LaForte (Waterford, Conn.) put the Bears on the board first at 14:05, set up by sophomore Eric Key (Clarksville, Md.), but Springfield found the net six times without interruption before the end of the first quarter. An unassisted score by second-year midfielder Jake Chambers (Annapolis, Md.) at 12:25 in the second made it 2-6 before the Pride scored four more times without allowing one to take a big lead into halftime.

Coast Guard outscored their hosts, 3-2, between the third and fourth quarters. Freshman attacker Ezekiel Christian (Stonington, Conn.) was the Bears' leader in points with two, while senior LSM Oliver Bolton (Darien, Conn.) led the sleuth in ground balls with four and caused turnovers with two. Sophomore Brett Tobasky (Brookline, Mass.) recorded ten saves after entering the game in the second quarter.

Bears lacrosse hosts down-the-street rivals Connecticut College (5-6) for their next one on April 15th. The Camels won a close one last season by a final score of 10-7.
