SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Facing a 3-10 hole at the start the fourth quarter, Coast Guard women's lacrosse threatened a comeback against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rivals Springfield College before the Pride regained the upper hand late for an 11-7 victory.
Coast Guard moves to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in NEWMAC play, while the Pride improves to 9-1 on the season, 5-0 in-conference, and extends their win streak to six. Springfield will face further league adversity when they play hosts to 7-3 (3-0 NEWMAC) Wheaton College (Mass.) on April 5th. The contest is scheduled as Springfield's senior day game
A 9-1 scoring run going back to the first quarter had Springfield out to a 10-3 lead with 14:24 left to play, but senior attacker
Katharine Rott's (Severna Park, Md.) goal just a minute-and-a-half later at 12:55 brought the Pride to a screeching halt while lighting a fire under her team. Coast Guard scored three uninterrupted after Rott found the back of the net, with the third coming from the stick of fellow senior attacker
Laine Weber (Granite Bay, Calif.) to make it a three-goal game with 5:06 on the clock. Despite the late threat, the Pride clamped down on defense while scoring the dagger at 1:21 to finally put it out of reach.
Coast Guard had a trio of two-point performances, with team co-captain
Caitlyn Coates (Hanover, Pa.) and fellow senior
Kira Howard (Wilton, Conn.) getting their's on a score and an assist, while junior attacker
Abby McAllister (Pleasantville, N.Y.) found the back of the net twice. Team co-captain
Maici Mintchwarner (Cream Ridge, N.J.) made ten saves in the effort. Springfield had a slight edge in most categories by the end of the contest, but the Pride held definite advantages in clears with a 15-for-19 rate to Coast Guard's 10-for-21; and draw controls, winning 14 while the Bears took eight.
WHO'S NEXT?
Coast Guard women's lacrosse looks to regain their momentum on April 9th at home against Mount Holyoke College (3-7, 1-3 NEWMAC). Last season's contest between the two teams in South Hadley was a memorable 23-1 win for the Bears in which McAllister contributed 12 points (six goals, six assists) to lead the team and set the program's single-game points mark.
