NEW LONDON, Conn. –
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, Coast Guard women's lacrosse honored their seniors prior to the game and watched them shine during it, with a 17-5 win over Wheaton. The Bears have seven seniors:
Caitlyn Coates(Hanover, PA),
Kira Howard(Wilton, CT),
Fiona McCartin(Centreville, MD),
Maici Mintchwarner(Cream Ridge, NJ),
Riley Mullen(Williamsburg, VA),
Katharine Rott(Severna Park, MD), and
Laine Weber(Granite Bay, CA), all of whom were joined by their families to be honored prior to the game.
Each of the Bears seniors left their mark on today's game. Coates scored four goals with two ground balls. Howard had three points(1 goal, 2 assists), two caused turnovers, and a ground ball. McCartin had two assists and a ground ball. Mintchwarner made five saves and had two ground balls. Mullen had a ground ball and caused turnover. Rott scored a goal and caused one turnover. Weber had four points(3 goals, 1 assist) including two free position shot goals which have her in the top five in CGA history.
Coast Guard jumped ahead, scoring early and often in today's game. They led 6-0 after one quarter and scored 13 of the game's first 15 goals with a 13-2 lead at the half. In the second half, Coast Guard scored just four goals but nonetheless cruised to victory by a score of 17-5. Coast Guard did have a jolt of excitement in the final seconds of the game when
Maici Mintchwarner made her 5th save of the game and 300th of her career. With that save, Maici becomes the first member of the 300 save club in program history.
Joining Mintcwarner in the history books today was junior
Abby McAllister(Pleasantville, NY). McAllister, who led the game with seven points, joins teammate
Caitlyn Coates as the only women in CGA history to score 200 career points.
Again stellar on the draw control was the Coast Guard quartet of
Katie Kogler(Fallston, MD),
Lauren Henry(Monroe, CT),
Tylr Neely(Hillsborough, NJ), and
Ella Campbell(Foxborough, MA). The four combined for 14 draw controls on the day to 11 from Wheaton.
The loss for Wheaton drops them to 8-7 on the year, 5-4 NEWMAC. They will play their final regular season game on Wednesday April 23rd at home vs MIT at 7:00 PM.
For Coast Guard, the Bears improve to 8-5(6-3 NEWMAC). They will host Clark University on Wednesday at 6:00 PM for their final regular season game.
