NORTON, Mass. - Sophomore ace
Ben Bonetto (Bend, Oreg.) earned the only point for Coast Guard men's tennis in today's 1-6 season finale loss at NEWMAC rivals Wheaton College (Mass.). Bonetto picked up the victory in singles action.
Coast Guard finishes their regular season with a 2-14 overall record and a 1-6 record against conference opponents, while Wheaton closes it out at 4-10 overall and 3-4 in league play. The win allowed Wheaton to scoot into the upcoming NEWMAC Championship Tournament as the fifth seed; the Lyons will battle #4 Clark (Mass), who enters the tournament with a 4-3 conference record (7-10) overall, in the play-in on April 23rd.
Coast Guard lost the doubles point to Wheaton but picked up a victory on court one after Bonetto and partner
Brendan Love (Winchester, Va.) persevered to a 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker) victory. The duo finishes their pairs campaign at a respectable 9-7. Third-year
Benjamin Carlander (Monument, Colo.) and sophomore
Noah Reice (Wilmington, Del.) made their opponents work for a win in their 4-6 loss at #2.
Bonetto won his individual match by way of opponent retirement. The sophomore took the first set, 6-2, and was out to a 4-2 lead in the second set before the forfeit, giving Bonetto an official record of 11-5 in 2025. Freshman #3
Anthony Gregoire (Hagatna, Guam) was handed a tough, but competitive, loss after 6-7 (7-9 tiebreaker) and 5-7 losses.
Coast Guard tennis will return next season with seven of their nine players.
