Springfield Sweeps Bears in Penultimate Match-Up

NEW LONDON, Conn.  -  In their second-to-last match of the season today, Coast Guard men's tennis was swept at home by NEWMAC rivals Springfield College. The Bears picked up one win in the form of a doubles victory.

Coast Guard moves to 1-5 in league play (2-13 overall), while the Pride improve 5-1 against conference opponents (13-2 overall) for their fourth straight win. Springfield will look to end their regular season on a high note this Saturday, April 19th, with an upset win over #13 Babson College (6-2 NEWMAC, 16-2 overall).

Coast Guard lost the doubles point with defeats on courts two and three before the Bears' top pair of sophomore Ben Bonetto (Bend, Oreg.) and junior captain Brendan Love (Winchester, Va.) battled to a 7-6 win at the #1 court. Bonetto later found himself on the wrong side of a 2-1 result at #1 singles after an 8-10 fall in the tiebreaker. Junior Benjamin Carlander (Monument, Colo.) took a 2-0 loss, but not before making his opponent earn the win it with a 6-7 tiebreaker.

Bears tennis will play their season finale this Saturday as visitors of NEWMAC foes Wheaton College (Mass.). The Lyons will bring an in-conference record of 2-4 (3-10 overall) into the match-up while seeking to avenge last season's 1-8 loss with the program's first win against Coast Guard since 2014.
