WELLESLEY, Mass. - Coast Guard women's lacrosse continued their recent success in a big way tonight with a 19-5 NEWMAC win on the road against Wellesley College. Junior attacker
Abby McAllister (Pleasantville, N.Y.) led the Bears with her second ten-point game of the season, while nine out of ten Coast Guard point-getters found the back of the net.
The Bears improve to 5-3 in NEWMAC play (7-5 overall), while Wellesley's 11th straight loss keeps them searching for their first conference win at 0-8 (1-12 overall). The Blue's luck could change in their April 19th contest with fellow Seven Sisters school Mount Holyoke College, who hold a NEWMAC record of 1-7 (3-11 overall).
Wellesley was leading early on, taking a 2-1 lead with 8:12 to go in the first quarter before Bears senior
Katharine Rott (Severna Park, Md.) equalized with a score at 5:15. Coast Guard put it between the sticks twice more during the quarter's final two minutes to take a two-point lead into the second, and then quickly made it a 5-2 game after another score with 12:52 until halftime on the clock.
The Blue responded with goals at 10:59 and 7:12 before the Bears went on a four-goal run to create some space. Both teams traded scores in the final two minutes of the quarter to make it 10-5 at halftime, but the Bears turned up the heat in the second half and scored nine goals while shutting out the hosts for the rest of the game.
A big factor in Coast Guard's performance tonight was their success on the ground, as the Bears held a 28-19 advantage in ground balls and an 18-9 advantage in draw controls by the game's end. Coast Guard also saw strong performances on both sides of the field, with the offense taking 26 shots on goal and the defense holding Wellesley to just ten.
McAllister's ten points on four goals and a season-high six assists is the second time this season the Bears' accumulator has reached the mark; McAllister was also highly active on defense with season-highs of four ground balls and three caused turnovers. The attacking duo of senior
Laine Weber (Granite Bay, Calif.) and junior
Isabella Judge (Buffalo, N.Y.) put together a pair of four-point nights, with Weber's coming from four goals for her third game in a row with at least three scores and Judge's coming from a goal and three assists.
Freshman defender
Ella Campbell (Foxborough, Mass.) picked up a career-high four ground balls while causing two turnovers and earning six draw controls, tying junior defender
Lauren Henry (Monroe, Conn.) in the latter stat. Apart from McAllister and Campbell, eight other Bears picked up multiple ground balls. Senior goalie
Maici Mintchwarner (Cream Ridge, N.J.) made eight saves while benefiting from her team's offensive performance to pick up her seventh win this season.
Bears women's lacrosse gets a couple of days to prepare for their April 19th NEWMAC battle against Wheaton College (Mass.). Coast Guard will celebrate their senior leadership prior to the game, which Wheaton will enter tied with their hosts in the conference standings at 5-3 (8-6 overall). Last season's match-up in Norton was a 14-9 win for the Bears.
