NEW LONDON, Conn. –
In a Wednesday afternoon game, Coast Guard fell to NESCAC school Wesleyan University by a score of 10-7. With the victory, Wesleyan earned their first road win of the season. They improve to 9-16 overall and will get back to NESCAC play this weekend with a three-game series vs Amherst, game one set for Friday April 18th at 4:00 PM.
For Coast Guard, they were playing from behind all game long. They got down 2-0 in the second, 3-0 in the third and were never able to stop the Cardinals enough to grab the lead back despite cutting the deficit to one run on three separate occasions.
CGA made their first move on offense in the bottom of the 5th when
Carson Cho(Haymarket, VA) drove in
Luke Percifield(Pinellas Park, FL) and
Kael Godshalk(Bangor, PA) with a line drive single up the middle. In the 6th, Wesleyan scored three more runs but Coast Guard again fought back to score three of their own. After a
Parker Madden(Ruston, LA) single,
Wyatt Duthu hit a two run shot over the left field fence for the senior's first bomb of the season. They would tack on the third when Godshalk singled in
Drew Basque(Kealakekua, HI) who singled after Duthu's homer and advanced to second on an error.
In the 7th inning; for the third inning in a row, Wesleyan scored and Coast Guard answered with each scoring once. This time it was a
Rick Barkley(Bellevue, WA) sacrifice fly. The Bears however, were unable to push across another run despite having two runners on with just one out after the sac fly. After holding the Cardinal offense scoreless in the top of the 8th, Coast Guard was again unable to drive in a runner in scoring position with less than two outs after
Connor Cilento(Point Pleasant, NJ) walked and stole second. The top of the 9th Wesleyan scored three runs to give themselves a cushion going to the bottom of the frame, CGA would score once when a
Wyatt Duthu fielders choice brought home pinch runner
Mason Phillips(Oak Park, IL) but the Bears would ultimately fall 10-7.
As a team, Coast Guard made four errors which led to just five of Wesleyan's 10 runs being earned.
Leading the CGA offense in the hit column were
Carson Cho with three and
Parker Madden with two. Duthu led the squad with three RBI while seven different Bears recorded a run scored.
Jackson Dorsey(Newark, DE) had another stellar outing in relief with 1.2 IP of scoreless ball with three strikeouts.
Coast Guard drops to 16-11 with the loss. They will get back to conference play when they host MIT for a doubleheader on Saturday April 19th with game one scheduled for 12:00 PM.
