NEW LONDON, Conn. –
In a league doubleheader between two teams in the top half of the NEWMAC standings, Coast Guard and MIT split. The Engineers won game one 10-3 with the Bears bouncing back to win game two 3-0. The split for MIT brings them to 12-14(7-3 NEWMAC). They will host Emerson College next on Tuesday April 22nd at 3:30 PM.
In game one, the teams were close through three innings with MIT jumping out 2-0 before CGA fought back with one in the third. The Bears loss came down to a bad inning in which MIT scored eight runs, none of which were earned.
The Bear offense in game one was stifled by MIT, with 5-9 in the lineup going hitless.
Carson Cho(Haymarket, VA) had two hits, a walk, and a run scored.
Nathan Stafford(Jupiter, FL),
Parker Madden(Ruston, LA), and
Rick Barkley(Bellevue, WA) each had one hit and one RBI.
Excellent in relief for the Bears was junior
Tyler Michalek(Haslet, TX). The hard throwing righthander threw 5.1 innings of hitless baseball with four strikeouts.
In game two, the CGA pitching staff picked up right where Michalek left off.
John DiMarsico(Severna Park, MD),
Raymond Priddy(Chico, CA), and
Jackson Dorsey(Newark, DE) threw a combined shutout to secure the Saturday split. DiMarsico started, earning the win with four innings of three hit, no walk ball while striking out two. Priddy threw the next three, shutting out MIT allowing just two hits and striking out two and bridging the gap to Dorsey. Dorsey, who earned his first career save in six out fashion, allowing two hits and striking out one. The scoreless outing improves Dorsey's season ERA to 1.21 which is good for 13th in the nation amongst qualifiers.
Coast Guard got all the offense they would need in the 3rd inning when
Carson Cho singled up the middle to score
Kael Godshalk(Bangor, PA) and
Connor Cilento(Point Pleasant, NJ). Cilento walked to begin the inning and Godshalk doubled to give Cho the 2nd and 3rd opportunity.
They would tack on one more in the 6th inning, after Cho singled, Barkley walked, and Madden walked,
Wyatt Duthu(Madison, AL) was hit by pitch to score the third CGA run and chase the MIT starter from the game. The two Cho singles and Godshalk double would be the only hits recorded by Coast Guard in game two but the Bears did walk six times(Barkley 3, Cilento, Percifield, Madden each with 1). They were also hit twice, Duthu's RBI HBP and again when baseball magnet
Kael Godshalk wore one off the arm.
Coast Guard, now 17-12(6-4 NEWMAC) currently sit tied in 4th place in the conference. They will travel to Springfield College on Tuesday April 22nd for a 3:30 game vs the Pride.
