Bears romp Emerson to get over .500

BOSTON, Mass.--

On a cold, rainy day in Boston, the Bears offense put on a show scoring 18 goals in an 18-4 victory over the Lions of Emerson College. Emerson drops to 5-8(1-7 NEWMAC) with the loss. They will host Smith College on Wednesday April 16th at 6:00 PM.

Coast Guard jumped ahead scoring the first four goals of the afternoon and five of the first six to lead 5-1 after one quarter. They scored two more early in the second before allowing one Lion goal. With the score at 7-2, the Bears completely broke the game open, rattling off eight unanswered goals in the second and third quarters to bring the score to 15-3. They would cruise to victory in the fourth quarter, adding three more scores for the 18-4 final.

As a team, the Bears dominated nearly every facet of the game. They outshot Emerson 36-13(21-8 on goal), had fewer turnovers(13-16), more ground balls(16-10), more draw controls(17-9), and were perfect on clears(14-14). In goal, Maici Mintchwarner(Cream Ridge, NJ) had a 60% save percentage to a 35.7% from Emerson.

CGA was led by two stellar seniors on offense: Laine Weber(Granite Bay, CA) and Kira Howard(Wilton, CT) who each had seven points. Weber is red hot of late, scoring seven points in back to back games with nine goals this week. She also added three ground balls today which was tied for a team lead. Howard got her seven points from three goals and a team high four assists. The other Bear with three goals was fellow senior Caitlyn Coates(Hanover, PA). Coates made history with her three goals as the first woman in Coast Guard history to reach 200 career points. She is the all-time program leader in both points and goals.

Five other CGA players scored, veterans Katharine Rott(Severna Park, MD) and Hannah Warnke(Lincoln, NE) each had two with Isabella Judge(Buffalo, NY), Aislinn Murray(Annapolis, MD), and Fiona McCartin(Centreville, MD) each adding one. Murray was stellar on both sides of the game with a team leading three caused turnovers as well. Tied for the team lead in ground balls with Laine Weber was goalkeeper Maici Mintchwarner with Howard, Coates, and Judge just behind with two.

The Coast Guard dominance on the X was led by Tylr Neely(Hillsborough, NJ)  and Katie Kogler(Fallston, MD). Kogler had five draw controls which tied for the team lead with defender Lauren Henry(Monroe, CT) who continues her excellence in picking up DCs. Neely was just behind with three, tied with freshman Ella Campbell(Foxborough, MA).

The Bears victory brings them over .500(6-5) for the first time since starting the season 2-1. They are 4-3 in conference which is good for 6th place currently in the NEWMAC. They will travel to Wellesley on Wednesday April 16th for a 7:00 PM game vs the Blue.
