Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

McAllister Leads Bears to Mid-Week NEWMAC Win Against Salve Regina

NEW LONDON, Conn.  -  Abby McAllister (Jr. - Pleasantville, N.Y.) was credited for ten points in Coast Guard women's lacrosse's 16-6 victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rivals Salve Regina earlier tonight. The win broke up a four-game losing streak for the Bears, who benefited from a multi-quarter nine-goal run in creating the large scoring difference.

Coast Guard improves to 3-4 (1-1 NEWMAC), while Salve moves to 2-6 (1-2 NEWMAC) with their second loss in a row. The Seahawks will look to get back on the right foot on April 2nd, playing hosts to Smith College (5-5, 1-2 NEWMAC) in further conference action.

McAllister's big night was a return to form for the junior attacker, who had not accumulated more than four points since returning from a one-game injury absence on March 15th at no. 13 Babson College. Her performance tonight marked just the third time in Bears' women's lacrosse history that a player accounted for at least ten points in a single game. McAllister currently holds the single-game record thanks to her 12-point game against Mount Holyoke College last year, while Darria McKenna '18 is the only other with her ten-point showing against Western Connecticut State University during the 2018 season.

Salve Regina cut into a 2-0 Coast Guard lead with a score at 9:20 in the first quarter, but that was all the Seahawks got for a while. The Bears proceeded to score nine unanswered goals from 6:54 in the first to 10:19 in the third quarter; McAllister contributed six scores to the run, while team co-captain Caitlyn Coates (Sr. - Hanover, Pa.) and teammates Katherine Rott (Sr. - Severna Park, Md.) and Isabella Judge (Jr. - Buffalo, N.Y.) had the other three. Both teams found the back of the net five more times during the remainder of the game.

Coast Guard's offensive scheme proved to be too much for the Seahawks, who allowed the Bears to take 36 shots throughout the night with 20 being on goal. The hosts were more successful on clear attempts, going 17-for-18 to Salve's 18-for-23, and held an 18-7 advantage in draw controls. Coast Guard also benefited from some foul calls throughout the night as they went 4-for-6 on free position shots while the visitors were given just one, which they missed. Salve outperformed the Bears in ground balls, scooping up 23 while the hosts had 17.

McAllister's big night was built on eight goals and two assists, with the goals total being a new career-high. Coates and Rott had four and three points, respectively, with both tallying them all on goals. Judge assisted on a Coates goal with 14 seconds to go in the third quarter to bring her points total to two, while Aislinn Murray (Jr. - Annapolis, Md.) tallied a point by assisting McAllister at 11:41 in the third.

Rowan Walsh (Jr. - Hampstead, Md.) and Ella Campbell (Fr. - Foxborough, Mass.) caused three turnovers each to tie for the game-high, while Walsh was one of six Bears on the evening to pick up two ground balls. Campbell had the game-high in draw controls with ten, while Katie Kogler (So. - Fallston, Md.) was second in the category with five. Co-captain Maici Mintchwarner (Sr. - Cream Ridge, N.J.) saved six shots in the winning effort to pick up her third win of the season.

Coast Guard will also play Smith for their next one, but the Bears will get first crack at the Pioneers on March 29th. The game will be Bears women's lacrosse's annual SPARS Game. Smith will be looking to avenge their two losses to the Bears last season, with the first coming as a 10-15 defeat in the regular season and the second being 6-11 vanquishing from the NEWMAC Championship Tournament in last season's quarterfinal clash.
