PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Of the four wrestlers Coast Guard sent to the 2025 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, two remain in the mix to become national champions.
Chase Randall (Spokane, Wash.) and
Carl DiGiorgio (Doylestown, Pa.) advanced to the semifinal rounds of their respective 133-pound and 285-pound classes while earning All-American nods in the process, the third such time each man has earned the honor.
Randall, the reigning champion at 133, began his quest for a repeat with a 2-0 win over Delaware Valley's
Jacob Blair (Muncy, Pa.) in the second round; the senior had a more dominant showing in the quarterfinals against Wabash's
James Day (Phillipsburg, N.J.), whom he scored a 17-3 major decision victory against to advance. Randall will face
Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill.) from UW-Whitewater in tomorrow's semifinal.
DiGiorgio's started his day with a 14-2 major decision win over Augustana's
Josh Woodrey (Chenoa, Ill.) in the second round before meeting North Central's
Robbie Bates (Morris, Ill.) in the quarters. Bates was riding high going into the match-up following his second-round upset of over top-ranked
Michael Douglas (Belmont, Wisc.) from UW-Lacrosse, but DiGiorgio squashed any dreams of another surprise with an 8-5 decision to move on. He'll take on Schreiner's
Austin Cooley (Plano, Tex.) tomorrow.
Coast Guard's other two wrestlers competing today were 157-pounder
Jacob Woodburn (Greensboro, N.C.) and 184-pounder
Gabriel Monroe (Kirkwood, N.Y.). Woodburn's advanced from the first round with a 4-2 win over Carthage's
Zaren Anderson (Garland, Tex.), but he'd be knocked out of the championship bracket after
Ryan Smith (Brick, N.J.) of Stevens handed him a 1-11 major decision loss. Woodburn then edged out Augustana's Michael
Macias (Davenport, Iowa), 7-6, in his first match of consolation before bowing out to
Rhenzo Augusto (Lake Barrington, Ill.) of Elmhurst in a 1-12 major decision loss. Monroe was knocked out of championship contention after being pinned by Merchant Marine's
Tyler Withers (Gettysburg, Pa.) before Roanoke's
Vincenzo Corvetto (Bristow, Va.) took a 15-11 decision in consolation.
Tomorrow's semifinals are planned for a 10 a.m. start, alongside placement and consolation matches, while championship finals are scheduled for 7 p.m.
