NEWPORT NEWS, VA–
After dropping three games in a row, Coast Guard got back on track in explosive fashion with a 12-4 win at #18 Christopher-Newport. For the Captains of CNU, they have now lost four straight games and will travel to Roanoke College tomorrow for a game at 4:00 PM.
On the mound for Coast Guard was freshman standout
John DiMarsico(Severna Park, MD). The zone pounding lefty has been nails thus far for the Bears, recording a decision in three of the team's four wins. He earned the victory vs Mitchell and CNU with a save vs Catholic. Today, in John's first career collegiate start, he threw five strong innings, allowing three runs, and recording his first college strikeout in the victory.
CGA would give DiMarsico early run support, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning. They scored their first two runs in the second with some help from Christopher Newport's defense when
Drew Basque(Kealakekua, HI) and
Wyatt Duthu(Madison, AL) scored on an error. That error was the first of seven on the day for the Captains. Basque and Duthu would again score an inning later on a
Luke Percifield(Pinellas Park, FL) single.
The Captains would rally back to score three runs in the bottom of the third but Coast Guard got one back in the fourth to make the score 6-3. In the 5th, the Bears again benefitted from their opponents miscues, with
Drew Basque again scoring on an error and
Luke Percifield scoring on a wild pitch to make the score 8-3 in favor of CGA. That score would hold until the bottom of the 8th when CNU scored on an infield single to cut the Bear lead to four. But in the top of the 9th Coast Guard got the insurance they needed, piling on four more runs for the 12-4 score that would ultimately hold.
Drew Basque and
Carson Cho each had three hits in the afternoon with Basque also leading the way with four runs scored.
Luke Percifield was the only Bear with numerous RBI with three.
Nathan Stafford(Jupiter, FL) and
Wyatt Duthu each had a pair of hits as well.
Kael Godshalk(Bangor, PA) had a gritty day at the park. The CGA centerfielder did not record a hit but walked, was hit by pitch, made a diving catch in the outfield, and put the ball hard in play forcing two of CNU's seven errors.
The Coast Guard lead was held in the final four innings by a stellar bullpen performance from sophomores
Jackson Dorsey(Newark, DE) and
Ryan Karman(Sayville, NY). Dorsey went 2.2 innings, striking out three, walking none, and allowing just one run to score. Karman finished the job with 1.1 innings pitched allowing no runs on one hit and striking out one.
The Bears; now 4-3, will travel back to Connecticut for their first home games of the season, a double header vs Keene State on Sunday March 16th with game one set to start at 12:00 PM.
