NORTON, Mass. –
In a must win game for Coast Guard, the Bears were able to hang on late to an 80-70 victory. The Bears trailed by two at the half despite leading much of the 1st but came out in the second firing on all cylinders, outscoring the Lyons by 12 in the half shooting 50% from the field.
The first lead of the 2nd for CGA came with 16:43 remaining when freshman guard
Colin Huang(Irvine, CA) found senior
Ben Yagey(Highlands Ranch, CO) under the basket for a layup. Wheaton would take the lead right back but with 9:06 left in the game, the Bears would again take the lead on an
Elijah Parent(Bristol, CT) three pointer from
Trevor Parks(Oldsmar, FL). This time they would not give the lead back. Coast Guard moved the ball well all afternoon with 24 assists.
Colin Huang and
Declan Rooney(Seattle, WA) led the way in assists with seven and six respectively. The Bears also had seven fewer turnovers than Wheaton.
With the loss, Wheaton College falls to 10-14(5-10 NEWMAC). The Lyons will travel to Emerson College Wednesday February 19th at 7:00 PM.
On the day, CGA was led in scoring by
Luke Farrell(Ortley Beach, NJ) with 18. Also in double figures were
Elijah Parent with 16 and
Cameron Brown(Ellicott City, MD) with 12.
Trevor Parks had a well rounded effort in the win with nine points, three assists, three rebounds, and a team high four steals. 10 different Coast Guard players secured rebounds with Rooney, Yagey, and Farrell leading the way on the glass.
The Bears will look to continue their winning ways with their home game of the regular season on Wednesday February 19th vs Salve Regina at 6:00 PM.
