NEW LONDON, Conn. —
Nikko Beato (San Diego, Calif.) and
Elliot Geer (Grove, Okla.) have been named the CoastGuardAthletics.com Athletes of the Week, presented by First Command, for their performances in the previous week ending on December 14th.
Beato, a senior at 125 pounds on the wrestling team, had a statement win to open the team's annual dual meet versus the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy last Wednesday. In his first bout back since an injury sustained earlier in the season, Beato raised the decibel level in Billard Hall by scoring a 19-5 tech fall win to give his Bears an early 5-0 lead. The dominant victory was a reminder of Beato's status as one of the top wrestlers at 125 in the region, and served as foreshadowing to a lopsided 40-3 victory for CGA over their bitter rivals.
Geer, a sophomore guard on the women's basketball team, led the way in rebounds and assists in both games of a 1-1 week. She had seven boards and six assists in CGA's loss to down street rivals Connecticut College last Monday before nearly recording a triple-double later in the week with her 11 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists on Thursday against Albertus Magnus College. Despite being listed as the shortest player on the team at 5' 6", Geer is leading women's hoops in rebounding this season with 6.1 per game.
Beato and wrestling will get some time off due to the holiday break before traveling to Pennsylvania to take part in Ursinus College's annual Manganaro Duals on January 10th. Geer and women's hoops will close out the semester this Saturday by hosting Rhode Island College (8-2).
