Bears sweep Mount Holyoke in final road match of regular season

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. –

After a dominant 3-0 performance last Tuesday vs WPI, the week off did not stunt any of the Bears momentum. Tonight, Coast Guard continued their excellence on the court as of late with another 3-0(25-14, 25-15, 25-21) win over Mount Holyoke. CGA led for nearly all of the match and never let the Lyons threaten.

With the loss, Mount Holyoke falls to 13-13(4-6 NEWMAC). The Lyons are still hanging on to the 8th spot in the NEWMAC volleyball standings. They will host Elms College Thursday at 7:00 PM before closing out their season on Saturday November 8th at Wheaton College at noon.

Coast Guard led the match in nearly every category. They had more kills(41-31), aces(6-3), assists(37-31), digs(37-35), attack percentage(35.2%-12.1%), and blocks(9-3). They also had fewer reception errors(3-6), service errors(7-8), and attack errors(9-20). Three of those errors for Holyoke and two for Coast Guard came on the final five plays of the match with all five of the last points being decided by error.

Leading the attack for the Bears was Amelia Matson(Mililani, HI) with 13 kills. The sophomore attacker Matson, who some call "Terminator" swung at a .345 clip and also contributed four blocks, two aces, three digs, and an assist. Sarah Somer and Abby Schweitzer(Emmaus, PA) each had seven kills for the Bears, Corey Lemmer(San Francisco, CA) had six, and Sam Ventimiglia(Key West, FL) went a perfect five for five on attacks.

Middle blocker Eloise Shirley(Rock Island, IL) had three kills and led the Bears in blocks with five. Behind Shirley and the aforementioned Matson were Ventimiglia and Somer with three a piece.

Feeding that Bear front line was again the formidable first year tandem of Holly Davis(Sisters, OR) and Ava Ahokovi(Honolulu, HI) who each had 18 assists. Davis also had three digs and led the team today with three service aces.

On defense, Laila Baameur was nails. The senior gave yet another banner performance with her fourth consecutive match with 20 or more digs, landing at exactly 20 this evening. Behind Baameur was Courtney Shire(Cape May, NJ) with six digs and no reception errors.

The win brings Coast Guard to 16-8(6-4 NEWMAC). The Bears currently sit tied in fourth place with Smith College in the standings. They will close out their regular season at home on Saturday at 1:00 PM vs Emerson College. Saturday, Coast Guard volleyball will also honor their four outstanding seniors with Senior Day festivities pre-game. The four Coast Guard seniors are Laila Baameur(Bakersfield, CA), Mack Boose(Camden, NC), Vickie Mancine(Chicago, IL), and Sarah Somer(Cary, NC).
