MARLBOROUGH, Mass. —
Broock Desta (San Diego, Calif.) of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy football team was recognized in the latest round of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference's (NEWMAC) Athletes of the Week (week ending October 5th).
Desta was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week for football after accounting for 21 of his team's 28 points in their NEWMAC win over SUNY Maritime College on Saturday. The senior captain caught game-tying receptions of 60 and 55 yards from
Elias Duncan (El Paso, Tex.) in the first half before putting the Bears up, 28-20, in the fourth quarter on a designed nine-yard pass play to last week's Offensive Athlete of the Week,
Matt LaBouliere (Pipersville, Pa.).
The Coast Guard football players have taken home four of the first five NEWMAC Football Offensive Athlete of the Week awards and head into their bye week on a four-game win streak, the best in the conference next to undefeated U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (4-0, 2-0).
Desta and the Bears football team will start the second half of their season with a return to Cadet Memorial Field on October 18th, hosting the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2-2, 0-2). Coast Guard won a close battle in Cambridge last season, 21-19, in which Desta caught six passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.
