NEW LONDON, Conn. —

Jay Martin (Newton, N.J.) of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy football team and Sarah Somer (Cary, N.C.) of volleyball have been named the CoastGuardAthletics.com Athletes of the Week, presented by First Command (week ending October 26th).

Martin is a senior captain on the football team, the Bears' starting left tackle, and is regarded as one of the best in the nation at his position. His impact is shown well through the fact that he has never allowed a sack in his collegiate career, but he contributed to the offense in a different way during Coast Guard's 59-28 win against Norwich University on Saturday. With his team facing a 1st & Goal from the Cadets' 4-yard line, Big Jay dropped back to receive a lateral from quarterback Sean Burns (Absecon, N.J.) and rumbled into the end zone for an earth-shaking six points.

Somer matches Martin in many ways as a captain and the tallest player on her respective team, but her biggest contribution is her offensive output on the pins. The senior hitter recorded 36.0 points across a 2-1 stretch for the Bears last week. She had 9.0 on eight kills and two block assists in last week's sweep of Salve Regina University; 14.0 on 12 kills and four block assists in a thrilling 3-1 win over Trinity College; and 15.0, all on kills, in a loss to Wesleyan University.

Martin and the Bears football team will head to Newport, Rhode Island, this weekend to face Salve Regina, while Somer and volleyball hosts Worcester Polytechnic Institute in their lone game of the week on Tuesday night.
