MARLBOROUGH, Mass. —
Julia Little (Pensacola, Fla.) of women's soccer,
Laila Baameur (Bakersfield, Calif.) of volleyball, and
Freddy Barber (Matoaca, Va.) of football have been named in the most recent round of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Athletes of the Week (week ending October 26th).
Little earns the nod for her continued impressive play in goal as of late. The junior helped Coast Guard post back-to-back shutouts in last week's matches against Salve Regina University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), recording three saves in the Bears' 1-0 win over the Seahawks and eight in an outstanding defensive display by the team in their scoreless draw with the Engineers. Little has been a major factor in a recent surge for Coast Guard women's soccer, recording three shutouts in the teams past four games to help them go 3-0-1 in those matches and launch themselves into the postseason picture.
Baameur being named a NEWMAC Athlete of the Week has become a familiar sight for Bears and NEWMAC fans alike, with this week's nod being her unprecedented fourth of the season. The senior captain recorded 71 digs across a 2-1 week for the volleyball team, kicking it off with 19 in a straight-set win over league foes Salve Regina. Baameur followed it up later in the week with a career-high 36 in the Bears' thrilling 3-1 victory over Trinity College, the fourth-most for a single game in program history, before adding the other 16 in the team's loss to #17 Wesleyan University. Baameur is averaging 5.62 digs per set on the season, a mark that leads the NEWMAC and stacks her up to 19th nationally.
Barber was named the Special Teams Athlete of the Week, joining Little in earning their first weekly nods from the conference. The freshman wide receiver has been one of the football team's top kick return options all season, allowing him to impact the game outside of the Bears' stacked receivers room. That impact was on full display in Coast Guard's 59-28 win on Saturday against NEWMAC opponents Norwich University, in which the first-year returned a Cadet kick-off 93 yards for six points. Barber also contributed on the coverage unit, adding a tackle to his stat line and beating all Norwich players to a loose ball on a Bears kick-off.
Little and Bears women's soccer play their final games of the 2025 regular season this week, hosting Wheaton College on Wednesday and Smith College on Saturday for a pair of contests that have heavy playoff implications with Coast Guard currently sitting eighth on the NEWMAC table. Baameur and volleyball only play once in the upcoming penultimate week of their season, hosting the Engineers on Tuesday with the goal of keeping a firm grip on fifth place in the conference standings. Barber and football will begin the final stretch of their season on Saturday when they head to Newport, Rhode Island, to face Salve.
