NEW LONDON, Conn —
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team won their third straight game with Wednesday night's 1-0 victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rivals Salve Regina University.
Ellie Millner's (Woodbridge, Va.) 41st-minute goal, assisted by
Arwen Wise (Weatherford, Tex.), gave Coast Guard their 1-0 lead, which was supplemented by a superb overall defensive effort by the Bears. The now three-game winning streak is the longest by a Coast Guard women's soccer team since the 2022 season.
Coast Guard improves to 3-5 in the NEWMAC and 4-10-1 overall, while Salve's sixth loss in their last eight moves them to 2-5-1 in-conference and 4-9-2 on the season. The Seahawks will look to improve upon their position in the league table when they host Smith College (3-10-1, 2-6) on Saturday, October 25th, at noon.
After 40-and-a-half minutes of scoreless stalemate, a Bears goal kick found its way to Wise after pinballing between players from both teams. The senior drove up the field before tapping a pass between a pair of defenders into Millner, who set herself up with one touch and fired a laser over the jumping hands of Seahawks starting goalie
Emelia DePonte.
Coast Guard backed up Millner & Wise's teamwork with an all-out defensive effort. The Bears limited Salve to just 11 shots on the night with three on goal, the latter of which is tied with the team's 1-0 win at Mount Holyoke a week prior for their third-least allowed this season. On offense, Coast Guard took 26 shots with ten on goal while dominating the corners, holding a 10-4 advantage over their guests on the right angles. The hosts finished the night with seven fouls to Salve's five.
Ella Pottle's (Epping, N.H.) three-game goal streak came to an end despite her game-high seven shot attempts, with three being on goal. Behind her was Millner, who made six tries with four on target, and
Bianca McIntosh (Woodbridge, Va.), who had five attempts on the night.
Julia Little (Pensacola, Fla.) made three saves, including an excellent diving stop on a 13th-minute volley by
Merissa Perachi, to claim her fourth shoutout of the season.
Perachi and
Paige Jessuck were Salve's leaders in attempts, making three tries each, while Perachi was on-target for two. DePonte and second-half replacement
Reagan Moffatt combined for nine saves on the night, with DePonte accruing the majority of six.
Bears women's soccer will play their final away game of the 2025 regular season on Saturday, October 25th, at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (9-5-2, 4-3-1) at 5:00 pm ET. Last season's game at Nitchman Field ended in a 2-1 victory for the Engineers after the last two meetings were settled in ties.
