Conn College Shuts Out Men's Soccer in Annual Battle

NEW LONDON, Conn. —

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy men's soccer team fell to up-street rivals Connecticut College, 0-3, to settle the teams' annual meeting. Conn scored within the first ten minutes of the game before adding two more goals in the 77th and 82nd minutes to put it away. The final score was the tenth consecutive time a meeting between Coast Guard and the Camels has ended in a shutout.

The Bears move to 7-3-3 on the season, with the loss breaking a seven-game unbeaten streak, while Conn improves to 6-2-4. The Camels will play their next one in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action on Saturday, in which they hold a 2-2-3 record, at Bates College (7-3-1, 3-3-1).

The game wasn't scoreless for long, with Conn taking an advantage just ten minutes into the action on a goal by Gavi Mpiana. Coast Guard's best opportunity of the half came in the 38th minute, when a header by Naveen Jayaram off of a free kick seemed to make its way past the Camels' keeper, but it was waved off after the referee called an apparent foul in the box.

The Camels eventually doubled their lead in the 77th. Maurice Pigola got a ball deep in Bears territory and managed to stay onsides before putting it into the lower right corner of the goal. Matt Quiros-Newton put the game away just six minutes later, sending his shot into the bottom right after it rattled around between players of both sides following a throw-in.

Conn College attempted 18 shots throughout the afternoon, with 10 being on-target, while Coast Guard was limited to five shots and none on goal. Cole Miller (Annapolis, Md.), the reigning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Offensive Player of the Week for men's soccer, was one of two Bears to try at least two shots, with the other being Jake Fish (Little Silver, N.J.), who was forced out with an injury after just eight minutes of action.

Despite the result, Connor Hickey (Portsmouth, Maine) had an undeniable presence between the posts all afternoon. Drawing his third start of the season and just his fifth appearance against a non-conference rival, the sophomore made a career-high seven stops amid the Camel onslaught. The hosting side ended up with a 5-1 edge on the corners while being whistled for 11 fouls to Coast Guard's ten. Each team saw a player issued a yellow card for dissent.

Bears men's soccer will see the field again this Saturday at noon, playing their annual Senior Day game while hosting Bridgewater State University (7-5-1). The two programs have only met twice, playing each other in 2014 and 2015 at Southern Maine University's Husky Fall Classic. The Bears will celebrate the careers and contributions of Aki Freeman (San Diego, Calif.), Aidan Miles (Tampa, Fla.), Jack Putnam (Halfmoon, N.Y.), and Alex Thissell (Ashburn, Va.) prior to kick-off.
