Bears fall on the road to #22 WPI

NEW LONDON, Conn. -

Despite a great second half and late comeback, Coast Guard was unable to get past the 22nd nationally ranked Engineers of WPI. The victorious Engineers will next face Emerson College on the road at 1:00 PM on Saturday January 11th.

For Coast Guard, the WPI firepower was too much to handle. After leading by 19 at the half, WPI came out in the 2nd half just as hot as they entered it, leading by as many as 26 early in the 2nd. But it was then that the Bears caught fire. From the 15 minute to 2:00 minute mark in the game, CGA would go on a 27-8 run, cutting the WPI lead to single digits. The comeback was a true team effort with six different Bears contributing to the 27 points. It was Colin Huang(Irvine, CA) who made the layup with 1:56 left on the clock to bring the game to single digits at 69-60. Unfortunately for the Bears, it would be too little too late as those were the last points they would score, ultimately losing 73-60.

The Bears offense was efficient in the 2nd half but it was largely Coast Guard's defense that allowed them to hang around. After allowing 47 points in the 1st half, the Engineers were held to just 26 in the 2nd. CGA forced WPI to more turnovers(11-14) and dominated the steal margin(11-3). Luke Farrell(Ortley Beach, NJ) and Declan Rooney(Seattle, WA) had three steals each to lead the way.

On offense, it was again Farrell and Rooney leading the way with 17 and 14 points respectively, the only Bears in double figures. Rooney led the team in field goal percentage at 54.5%. Farrell was second on the squad in rebounds with six trailing just center Cameron Brown(Ellicott City, MD) who had nine.

Coast Guard will host the Clark University Cougars on Saturday January 11th at 1:00 PM.
