NEW LONDON, Conn. --
With six seconds left on the clock in regulation, Coast Guard appeared to be heading for defeat. The University of New England had a 35 yard field goal to win the game. After an icing timeout from Coach Grant and his staff, the UNE kicker missed and the Bears lived to fight in overtime.Â
The first quarter was a back and forth affair for UNE and CGA. The Bears scored on their 2nd snap of the game and the Nor' easters scored on their final play of the quarter. The Coast Guard TD came on a 72 yard run from sophomore RB James Wheeler(Oneida, NY). Wheeler IV would go on to be the game leader in rushing with 184 yards. UNE would tie the game up with only four seconds left on a AJ DeFilio(Durham, CT) TD reception from sophomore QB Chris Lang(Freehold, NJ).Â
In the 2nd quarter, CGA was unable to get anything going on offense with their four drives ending with two punts, a fumble, and a knee into the half. Just before half, UNE again scored with under 30 seconds to go with a two yard touchdown rush jumping over the pile for sophomore back Damien Jones(Fitchburg, MA).Â
The third was a defensive show with neither team allowing a touchdown. The only points of the quarter came on a drive ushered by quarterback
Joey Armentrout(Oceanside, CA) and running back
James Wheeler IV that was capped off by a 28 yard field goal from the leg of sophomore kicker
Brennan Holt(Benton, KY).Â
In the 4th, Armentrout found his chemistry with his favorite target, junior wideout
Broock Desta(San Diego, CA). Trailing by four with just over six minutes to go, Armentrout found Desta for a 62 yard, lead taking touchdown. Seven minutes later, after UNE answered with a score of their own, Armentrout again found Desta in the endzone for the lead. This time on a 3rd and 15 perfectly placed dime from Armentrout for Desta who went up and secured the ball in one on one coverage in the corner of the endzone.UNE junior kicker Jack Niland(Glastonbury, CT) tied the score at 24 a piece with 2:26 to go and after the Bears defense went three and out, UNE missed their aforementioned chance to seal the game.Â
In overtime the Bears had all of the momentum. They won the toss, deferred, and Coach Fleischmann's defense saw red. On QB pressures from defensive linemen
Solomon Ashby III(Portsmouth, VA) and
William Wolf(Front Royal, VA), UNE was only able to complete one short pass in their first three plays. On 4th down, special teamer
Jay Martin(Hampton, NJ) took care of the rest. The 6-6 offensive lineman played hero when he was just able to get a hand on the UNE kick for a clutch field goal block. Two plays later, Armentrout handed the rock off to
James Wheeler IV and the Bears walked-off victors.Â
With the loss, the University of New England Nor'easters fall to 0-1 and will next face WPI on the road Friday September 13th at 7:00 PM.Â
For the Bears today,
Joey Armentrout had 285 passing yards in a winning effort with more than half going the way of
Broock Desta, who had 173 reception yards. Fellow receivers
Matthew LaBouliere(Pipersville, PA) and
Chase Politte(Festus, MO) added 57 and 53 receiving yards.Â
On defense, the Bears won on a true team effort, with contributors all over. Senior DB
Jonathan Clifford(Williamsville, NY) led the way in total tackles(8) with
Hayden Anderson(Washington, NC),
Noah Rohrer(Mount Joy, PA), and Soloman Ashby III following just behind with seven apiece.
Hayden Anderson anchored the Bears no fly zone this afternoon with three pass break-ups, leading all players in the game. Defensive linemen
Solomon Ashby III and
William Wolf wreaked havoc on the UNE offensive line and quarterback, with constant pressures, pockets collapsing, and Wolf breaking through for 2.5 sacks. One of Wolf's sacks forced a fumble as well on a leveling tackle of the nor'easter quarterback.Â
Kicker
Brennan Holt was perfect on the day, making his only field goal attempt and going 3/3 on PATs.
Coast Guard will look to keep the momentum of the 4th quarter and OT rolling next Saturday in a road game vs Anna Maria at 12 PM.
