Bears get back on track with 3-1 victory over Hartford

NEW LONDON, Conn. –

After falling in a tight battle with MIT earlier in the week, Coast Guard defeated the Hartford Hawks 3-1(25-15, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20). With the loss, UHart falls to 6-6. They will next play Nichols College in a conference match on Tuesday October 1st at 7:00 PM.

With the stands filled with friends and family on Coast Guard's family weekend, the Bears put on a show. Standout freshman hitter Amelia Matson(Stafford, VA) continued her recent stretch of brilliance with a career high 16 kills including the finishing touch, match sealing kill in the fourth set. Matson also had six digs and three blocks. Her three blocks trailed only middle hitters Mack Boose(Camden, NC) who had five and Eloise Shirley(Burke, VA) who had four.

On the attack, Matson was the only Bear with double digit kills as CGA spread the wealth. Spreading the ball around was sophomore setter Sophia Rosenberg(Lebanon, PA) who had 33 assists. 13 different players had kills on the evening, even back row defenders Vickie Mancine(Chicago, IL), Kaela France(Calhan, CO), and Laila Baameur(Bakersfield, CA) joined the attack with one kill apiece. The three also combined for 54 digs on the evening. France had 37, Mancine had nine, and Baameur had eight.

Senior hitter Shannon Shaw(Torrance, CA) had a well rounded effort in the win finishing second on the team in both digs(17) and kills(6).

Coast Guard, now 10-5, will get back to NEWMAC action tomorrow at 1:00 PM with a home match vs Babson College.
