CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In a mid-season road contest on Tuesday night, Coast Guard Women's Volleyball fell to the #6 ranked MIT Engineers by a score of 3 sets to 1.
With this loss, the Bears move to 9-5 on the season while the Engineers remain undefeated at 13-0. Up next for MIT is a trip across the state where they will take on Springfield College who currently sits at 6-3 on the season. That game will be played on Saturday in Springfield's Blake Arena.
The first set started off in Coast Guard's favor with the first point of the night coming on a service error from MIT. Unfortunately for the Bears, the Engineers controlled the set the rest of the way, with the hosts eventually taking the set, 25-18.
The Bears were more competitive in set two, as the score was tied at 6-6 and then again at 13-13. It was junior pin attacker
Sarah Somer who was responsible for tying the game at 13, as she had a well-placed serve that MIT was not able to return. Ultimately, the Engineers would pull away to win the second set by the same score as the first, 25-18.
Down 2-0, the Bears rallied back and won set three in dominant fashion. Coast Guard didn't trail once the entire set, starting the set off on a 4-0 run spurred by a kill from sophomore middle
Eloise Shirley. The Engineers did close the gap later in the set, cutting the Bears lead down 21-20. However, a kill from senior pin attacker
Shannon Shaw allowed Coast Guard to run away with the set, ultimately taking it by a score of 25-20.
The fourth and final set was another close one, with Coast Guard jumping out to a quick 3-1 lead to start the set behind another great kill from Shaw. However, MIT refused to go away and eventually pulled away and took set four 25-21, which ended the game.
For the Bears, Shaw and freshman pin
Amelia Matson led the way in kills with 10 each while senior libero
Kaela France led the way in digs with 28. Additionally, sophomore setter
Sophia Rosenberg accounted for 33 of the team's 35 assists.
Women's Volleyball is back in action on Friday night when they will take on the University of Hartford at 6:00 p.m. in their first of two matches during USCGA Family Weekend.
