CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Coast Guard Academy men's soccer faced the Massachussetts Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon in their seventh contest of the season. The Bears found themselves tied 1-1 late in the contest until junior forward
Aki Freeman scored his sixth goal of the year to propel the team to a 2-1 victory.
This result marked the Engineers third consecutive loss, most recently falling to Wentworth Institute of Technology by a score of 1-0. MIT's record now sits at 4-4 on the season and they will be heading to Boston, Mass. to play Suffolk in their next match.Â
Coast Guard struck first in the 20th minute of the contest. With a well placed corner kick, Freeman found senior defender
Jude Sargent who buried the ball in the back left corner of the net to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead. This was Sargent's first goal of the season.
The game remained tied for the following 40 minutes or so, with both teams getting multiple good looks to score. However, the Engineers were able to score in the 60th minute, with a header sneaking past junior goalie
John Putnam which tied the game at 1.Â
With time winding down, Freeman did what he does best, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 79th minute to give the Bears a 2-1 lead. Freeman got loose down the left side where he ultimately beat the goalie near post for the score. This goal proved to be the game-winner, preserving the Bears undefeated record and top 12 ranking.Â
Men's soccer heads to North Dartmouth, Mass. for their next match-up where they will take UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday. The game is slated for a 6:00 PM kick-off and the Bears will hope to repeat a similar outcome to last year's game, when they defeated the Corsairs 6-0. UMass Dartmouth is coming off a 2-1 win against Worcester State.Â
