NEW LONDON, Conn. –
After back to back five set matches, Coast Guard made quick work of the Mitchell Mariners(25-14, 25-8, 27-25). With the loss, Mitchell falls to 3-5 on the campaign. They will next go on the road to face Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday at 11:00 AM.
The Bears made quick work of the first two sets, even holding their opponent to single digits in the second. The Mariners, however, came out strong in the third. The pair of New London foes fought back and forth into the 20s in set three but with the Bears trailing 20-22, freshman sensation
Amelia Matson(Stafford, VA) tied the set at 22 all with back to back kills. After Mitchell got to set point with two points of their own, a freshman again played hero for the Bears with a key block by
Dylan Elferdink(Hernando Beach, FL). The Bears got to match point at 25-24 after kills from a likely source: middle
Samantha Ventimiglia(Key West, FL) and an unlikely one: libero
Kaela France(Calhan, CO). Mitchell was able to tie the set at 25 but the Bears would clinch the victory on a kill by Ventimiglia and ace by
Amelia Matson.
CGA was led in kills by
Amelia Matson who continued her recent hot streak with eight. Senior
Shannon Shaw(Torrance, CA) added six of her own.
Kaela France led the squad in digs with eight, sophomore setter
Sophia Rosenberg(Lebanon, PA) had seven while also leading the team with 16 assists.
The 8-4 Bears will get right back at it tomorrow in a road match vs Roger Williams at 6:00 PM.
