Barkley sets single season home run record and Duthu hits grand slam in win at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. – In the 3rd inning, shortstop Rick Barkley hit a two run home run to give the Bears a 7-0 lead. The home run also moves Barkley into sole possession of 1st place in the Coast Guard record books in single season home runs with 10.

Coast Guard would go on to win the game 16-2 in an offensive explosion. The loss drops Wheaton to 14-7 (8-2 NEWMAC). The Bears tallied 17 hits across seven innings in the victory. Coast Guard got the scoring started early with a bases loaded walk by Luke Percifield in the 2nd inning. Besides Barkley, junior second baseman Wyatt Duthu also homered, his being a grand slam. The slam for Duthu was the first of the season for CGA. The shot blew the game open for the Bears, giving them a 5-0 lead. Nate Stafford and John Tacchini each had four hits in the win.

On the mound, Sean Harmon was excellent. The freshman threw six innings allowing just two runs and five hits despite only striking out one. The defense behind Harmon was perfect, with no errors all game. Sophomore pitcher RJ Priddy struck out two in his one inning of work to close out the game.

The Bears victory improves them to 16-7 (6-2 NEWMAC). They will next Mitchell College Thursday April 18th at home with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 PM.
