Bears Tally 21 Runs in Victories Over WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. - Bears Baseball was on the road taking on the Engineers from WPI, tallying 21 runs between the two victories.

In game one, CGA came from behind late in the game to come out on top, 10-8.

WPI struck in the first two innings, going up 4-0 before CGA could get on the board. Into the top of the third, the Bears came within one, plating three runs. Parker Madden got it going with a single that scored Carson Cho. Nathan Stafford then hit a sacrifice fly for and RBI, putting the Bears within two. Later in the inning, Carson Cho stepped up and hit an RBI double. Heading into the bottom half of the third, the Bears were only trailing, 4-3.

Despite coming close, the Engineers matched it and added three runs of their own, the Bears now down, 7-3. WPI added another in the bottom of the fifth, CGA now having to dig themselves out of an 8-3 hole.

Late in the game, Coast Guard found its fire and began the rally. In the top of the seventh, with two on, Stafford singled to bring home Wyatt Duthu. Two batters later, still with two runners on, Richard Barkley launched one over the left-center fence for a three-RBI homer, the Bears now within one. Next at-bat, John Tacchini hit a solo shot of his own to tie the game at eight.

The Bears weren't done yet. Charles Red stepped to the plate and hit CGA's third homer of the inning, giving them their first lead of the game at 9-8. Coast Guard shut down its opponent in the home half of the inning, keeping the lead heading into the eight.

One more run came across for the Bears in the eighth off another sacrifice fly by Stafford that scored Duthu.

CGA kept WPI from scoring anymore, taking the 10-8 win.

Cho hit a perfect 4-4 at the plate with an RPI. Stafford and Barkley led in RBIs for the Bears with three a piece. Sean Rojas was credited with the win for the Bears, while Ryan Karman got the save.

In game two, CGA took control of the game early, never giving up the lead on the way to the 11-5 victory.

The second inning saw five runs for the Bears. Kael Godshalk brought in the first run off a single. Tacchini then scored off an error by WPI's catcher. With Duthu at the plate, he hit an two-RBI double, followed by a double by Stafford for an RBI.

WPI got one back in the third, but in the next half inning, CGA added another off a double by Stafford.

The Engineers scored again in the fifth, however, the Bears scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Each team scored one in the ninth, with the Bears coming out on top.

Duthu was 2-4 at the plate with three RBIs, followed by Stafford, also 2-4, with two RBIs. Harrison got the win on the mound with nine strikeouts.
