Bears notch first NEWMAC victory of the season

WORCESTER, Mass. - After a back and forth battle, Coast Guard edged out Clark for their first NEWMAC victory of the season. With just over three minutes remaining, Eric Key scored his fourth goal of the game to give the Bears a 12-11 lead, they would go on to win 13-11. The victory improves Coast Guard to 2-7 (1-2 NEWMAC). The Clark Cougars fall to 3-8 (0-3 NEWMAC).

Coast Guard took an early 1-0 lead on an Eric Key goal but it would not last long with Clark following with three unanswered. The Bears went on a run of their own in the 2nd quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to make the score 6-3. With under a minute to go in the 1st half, the Cougars cut the lead to just one and kept the momentum going into the 2nd half, tying the score at 6-6 soon after the quarter started.

CGA again took the lead in the 3rd, this time with goals by Patrick Smith and Ryan Hunter just over one minute apart. Then the Cougars caught fire and seemed to have taken control of the game. In the final five minutes of the 3rd, they scored four goals to take a 10-8 lead going into the final quarter. With under 10 to go in the game, Clark still held a two goal lead but the Bears fought back and took advantage of their opportunities. They scored four goals and held Clark scoreless for the final 10 minutes of action to secure a much needed victory.

The Bears were led in scoring by the aforementioned Eric Key with four goals. Patrick Smith and Ryan Hunter added three each. Ryan Hunter also had four assists for a team leading seven points. Oliver Bolton led the team with seven ground balls. In goal Dustin Miller earned the first victory of his career with four saves, all coming in the 4th quarter.
