WORCESTER, MA - Coast Guard started their conference schedule off on the right foot with a double header sweep on the road vs Clark. With the victories, the Bears improve their record to 10-5 (2-0 NEWMAC). The Clark Cougars drop to 16-5 (1-2 NEWMAC).
In game 1, the Cougars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with two home runs in the 1st inning. The Bears would not take long to answer, scoring five runs in the 2nd and five more in the 3rd. CGA took the lead in the 2nd on a two out single by
Carson Cho.
Wyatt Duthu and John Steel scored on the hit to tie the game and
John Carroll scored on a throwing error by the Cougars to give Coast Guard their first lead.
CGA would go on to score five more runs and had a 15-7 lead going into the bottom of the 6th. In the 6th, the Cougars scored one run and appeared to be on the verge of getting themselves back in the game with the bases loaded and only one out. Instead, freshman right hander
Ryan Karman came in and closed the door, retiring the next two batters and stranding all three runners. Karman would go on to earn the save, throwing the next three innings allowing no runs, no hits, and striking out three. Sophomore shortstop Rick Barkley added an insurance run homer in the 8th, a hit that would foreshadow his next game.
The Bears were led on offense by freshman Nate Stafford, who went 3/5 with five RBI. Junior outfielder
Jack Steel went 4/6 at the plate with three runs scored. Senior
John Tacchini remained hot at the plate, going 2/4 with two walks and two runs.
In game 2, Coast Guard made sure the Cougars never had a chance, jumping out to an 8-0 lead and winning by a score of 12-4. Rick Barkley added to his 8th inning homer in game 1 by hitting three more in game 2. The third home run of the game gave Barkley 12 on his career and moved him into 5th place all-time. Barkley was joined by Charlie Red, who hit his first career home run and drove in four runs in the game.
Nathan Stafford added three RBI of his own, going 4/5.
On the mound in game two,
Harrison Milbert was outstanding. The sophomore from Kingston, Massachusetts notched his third win of the season with seven innings of one run ball. He struck out six and allowed just four hits in his effort.
The Bears will look to continue their winning streak with a home game vs Westfield State Monday April 1 at 3:30.
