BRISTOL, RI - Coast Guard softball falls to 1-9 on the season with a double header loss to Roger Williams by scores of 6-2 and 8-4. With the victories, Roger Williams improves to 9-3 on the season. They will next face Mitchell College in a home double header on Saturday.
In game one the Bears buried themselves early, allowing four runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. They were able to fight back with starting pitcher
Dana Walker holding the Hawks scoreless for the next four innings. In the top of the 5th, CGA finally broke through offensively.
Natalie Beck tripled to score
Veronica Krystofik, who started the rally with a walk. Then senior
Isabelle Shroyer singled to score Beck and cut the lead in half. Unfortunately for Coast Guard, they gave two runs back in the bottom of the 6th and were unable to complete the comeback. Beck and Shroyer had two hits each with the only other CGA knock coming from senior
Julia Breidenthal.Â
The bats woke up for the Bears in game 2. Each starter in the lineup recorded at least one hit for a season high 14. They were unable to convert the baserunners into runs, scoring just four times to Roger Williams' eight. The game was back and forth early with RWU taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st and Coast Guard tying the game at 1-1 in the 2nd on a Krystofik sac fly to score
Lillia Farlow. Roger Williams fought right back in the bottom of the inning to take the lead and they would not give it back. Three consecutive scoreless offensive innings for the Bears followed by a five run bottom of the 5th for the Hawks put CGA away. The Bears did put up a fight in the final innings, scoring two in the 6th and one in the 7th to cut the defecit to four but ultimately lost 8-4.
Coast Guard will open up their NEWMAC season and look to end their losing streak this Saturday March 23rd at Babson College. The double header is set for 12 & 2 PM.Â
