Myrtle Beach, SC- The offensive explosion from the previous day's games carried over to today as the Coast Guard Academy swept a double header vs New England College to improve to 4-0 on the season. With the losses, the NEC Pilgrims fall to 1-7.
In game 1 the Bears went down 1-2-3 in the first and second innings before batting around and scoring five runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Senior left fielder
John Carroll was the catalyst, leading off the inning with a single. He was followed by
Luke Percifield and
Jack Steel who hit singles of their own to load the bases for junior second baseman
Wyatt Duthu. Duthu; who went 3/4 in the game, delivered an RBI single on the first pitch he saw.
Carson Cho too jumped on the first pitch he saw and drove in Percified with a sacrifice fly to right field. The next batters Nate Stafford and Rick Barkley too did damage on the first pitches they saw, Stafford with an RBI single and Barkley with a two RBI double.
CGA added five more runs in the game including another two RBI double from Barkley and a run scored by
Kael Godshalk hustling home on a throw down to 2nd base.
On the mound,
Harrison Milbert was masterful. The sophomore from Kingston, Massachusetts allowed zero runs in six innings pitched while striking out seven and allowing just three hits. With his performance he earned his first victory of the season.
In game 2 of the twin bill, the Bears jumped out to a big lead immediately. They scored six runs and chased the opposing starter out of the game with just one out in the 1st, finishing the inning with a 7-0 lead. Senior 1st baseman Charlie Red had the loudest hit of the inning, with a three run bases clearing double.
The seven runs were more than enough for starting pitcher
Sean Harmon. The right handed pitcher from Bathesda, Maryland was dominant in his first career collegiate start. He threw five shutout innings with 10 K's and just three hits en route to his first victory. Relievers Aiden Anderson and
Jackson Dorsey shut the door and the Bears cruised to an 11-1 victory. After two consecutive days with double headers, Coast Guard will take tomorrow off before facing Catholic University Wednesday March 13th at 9am.
