Women's Lacrosse Downs Bridgewater St. in Home Opener

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Women's Lacrosse faced Bridgewater State in its home opener, taking down the visiting Bears with a final score of 14-7.

The first goal of the game went in favor of Coast Guard coming off Mary Wahlin, assisted by Abby McAllister. Just over five minutes to go in the first, Addy Bass added to CGA's lead with a free position goal. 

BSU then went on to get two goals less than a minute apart, tying the game. 

That would remain the score heading into the second quarter. 

Bridgewater St. got the first goal of the second 15, taking the lead for the first time. Coast Guard answered with a goal of its own two minutes later by Caitlyn Coates, tying it back up at three.

Coast Guard retook the lead with just over four minutes left in the half, M. Wahlin getting her second goal of the game, and putting CGA up 4-3. The lead didn't last long as BSU got a goal of its own, tying it up once again. 

CGA answered and regained the lead just 32 seconds later with Coates' second goal of the game, putting CGA up, 5-4. With 19 seconds left in the half, Laine Weber put the Bears up by two, making the score 6-4 heading into the break. 

The first goal of the second half went to Coast Guard with M. Wahlin getting her third of the game. With 10 minutes left in the first, CGA was up, 7-4. Coates joined the three-goal party, putting the Bears up by four with 7:32 left to go in the third. Less than 30 to go in the quarter, Olivia Wahlin put the Bears up 9-4.

Bridgewater St. tried to cut into the lead with a goal, but Coast Guard went right back up by five with a score by Viola Ajro. With just under 11 minutes to go in the game, CGA was leading, 10-5.

Coast Guard added two more goals just forty seconds apart, McAllister getting her first of the game and Coates getting her fourth. 

BSU attempted a comeback with two goals, but Bass gave CGA two of her own, and Coast Guard came out with the 14-7 victory. 

Coast Guard will play next on February 28th at 5 PM, hosting Endicott.
